So instead Labor winds back private health insurance benefits/incentives. More pressure on the public hospitals as people opt out of health insurance. Waiting lists blow out, cancer patients wait longer for treatment etc. Good on you Labor, well done. Having worked extensively in both sectors, I can assure you the public system is poorly run, with loads of dollars down the drain each year. As an example, we paid about $1mil for a new MRI machine recently. Same machine would be sold to a public hospital for $2mil+, partly because of their stupid outdated tender process but mostly because the public servants that run them have no idea

Mate of mine is head of paediatrics at a major Sydney hospital, is taking early retirement (as in 10 years early) I was surprised - he's a dedicated guy and definitely a lefty. I asked why, he said the situation with the federal and state health bureaucracy is just intolerable, has got worse since Rudd's "reform", he's had enough of spending all day, every day fighting BS.

the pink batts a good idea? Only in theory.

They created a sudden and unprecedented level of demand in an established supply chain, which resulted in a flood of sub-standard imported batts from China which have 20% of the thermal efficiency required.

He did well lasting that long. I was appointed as staff specialist at a prestigious Sydney hospital when I finished my training. I could not cope with the ingrained inefficiencies of the public system and the institutionalised mentality of the long term staff specialists who basically avoided doing work to the detriment of patients. I resigned within 3 months and would never go back

    Quote of the day.

"The budget should be balanced, the Treasury should be refilled, public debt
should be reduced, the arrogance of officialdom should be tempered and
controlled, and the assistance to foreign lands should be curtailed, lest
Rome become bankrupt. People must again learn to work instead of living on
    public assistance." - Cicero , 55 BC

So evidently we've learned absolutely nothing in the past 2,067 years.

SWAN DIVE A POLITICALLY COSTLY BELLY FLOP

What Swan really said in his clearly uncomfortable Press conference today was that the time available to him to further cook the books had lapsed.

The nutjobs were right again. The economic ineptness of Wayne Swan combined with the profligate waste of Julia Gillard will be severely dealt with.

The fact is that both he and Gillard were rolled by Caucus... again!
Labor’s faith in their own leadership has evaporated and that has always been a harbinger to a lengthy political void.

“A revenue crisis”, claimed Swan. Oh golly, a revenue crisis? A sudden revenue crisis that has emerged only in the past two weeks?

A revenue crisis that has been clearly evident to every first-year economics student and every member of the Reserve Bank Board for the past two years?

The clear message given to Government long ago was, stop spending or face yet more unsustainable, crippling deficits for decades. Yet outrageous Gillard spending, which has been outstripping revenue since the day she won office, remained unabated.

Interest rates will fall to 2% next year. The rest of the World is near zero. New Zealand is already at 2.5% and this apparently holds no concern for Swan.

His spin on falling interest rates is to claim success in assisting home-owners. He doesn't mention superannuants. Even Swan should know that interest rates fall because of a failing economy that needs stimulus.

Gillard was determined to spend her way to the next election and held no fear for the wasted billions in bribes she spent on a UN seat.

Her over-spend of $300 billion ($50 billion Coalition surplus plus current $250 billion deficit) was to be paid for by plundering our only competitive exporter, the mining industry.

That was never going to happen because Gillard and Swan are economic illiterates. They simply don’t understand commerce.

What Gillard and Swan intended taxing is still in the ground waiting for Abbott to can the tax on.

The Carbon tax (10% of which goes to the UN, so it was a very costly seat) has devastated family budgets.

From Gillard and Swan’s insulated Canberra tower it’s hard to see people who are genuinely struggling.

Gillard is not about helping working people, she proved that with her AWU fraud, she is about ideology and she has been since her university communist-committed days of her Socialist Forum.

What happened here was Gillard wanted to continue rolling out potentially election-winning unfunded “grand plans”.

Swan, who’s seat is marginal, assured her he could bring down a 2012/13 budget surplus by shifting an array of expenditure into the following financial year.

He could also change company tax to bring forward collection dates. He could off-load $7 billion of illegal immigration costs to the aid budget (because they can’t take the UN seat away from us now) and an array of other dodgy book-cooking.

    Gillard foolishly believed him.

So, how has Labor fared with our economy? Well, here it is in a nutshell:

In 2007 every man woman and child in Australia had $850 in the bank, courtesy of Peter Costello. In a short five years of Labor, every man woman and child in Australia owes $7,000 and paying interest only, with not a dent in the principal.

And what has a struggling family of four have to show for their $28,000 of expenditure? A new car perhaps, an extension to the house? Maybe a round-the-World trip or two years’ private school fees?

Nope... nothing! Not one thing a family of four can say they have benefited from. In fact they have gone backwards.

Gillard is for the family and the workers eh ...since bloody when?

People realised the PRIVATE health system was a joke and in any serious case the only real option was the public system anyway... I had private insurance before the Howard reform - when the 30% rebate came in, my fees went up... you guessed it, 30% within a dollar or so. Cheapest private cover miraculously worked out to almost exactly the minimum tax penalty payable and suddenly every 2nd ad on TV was for 'health insurance' that now gave you 'free' sneakers and massages each year. I cancelled my insurance on principle and paid the surcharge.

Agree public health needs way fewer pencil pushers and way more front line staff.

Huh? An R2 batt is an R2 batt wherever it's made. I've never heard of 'substandard' batts - can you clarify? So how could you implement a scheme like this without creating unprecedented demand??? Secretly stockpile?

Not true at all. With all due respect, you have know eye dear. That was the case in the 70/80's. There is currently a plethora of private hospitals doing high end work. Good luck if you get sick and end up in a public hospital

On ABC at the time (I think 7:30 report) they did a story on sub-standard chinese batts, which were flooding the market because local manufacturers didn't have capacity to meet demand. Issue was batts were made of inappropriate material.

I imagine that we haven't heard much since because the local guys have filed damages claims with Mr Combet's department and can't comment until legal proceedings conclude.

No doubt the govt will be doing everything to address those claims before the 2013 election.

The point is that Treasury told Rudd/Swan/Garrett not to rush the scheme, but the mania for media coverage trumped common sense, as with everything around Rudd.

ps. gotta love the way the backflip on the 2013 surplus is being presented by Swan and Wong, while Gillard stays well out of the way. Carefully planned of course.

If these people ran a business the way they run the country they would be in jail and declared bankrupt.

Sorry Greg, but there are lots of private hospitals doing high end work IN MONEYMAKING AREAS. Private hospitals are still mainly for elective admissions. If you get hit by a bus - you're going to be better off in a public hospital where all the big, basic equipment is in one place. Same with cancers and ongoing illnesses.

Found this http://www.ausindustry.gov.au/ClimateChange/IIAP/Documents/Approved%20Product%20List%2019%20Feb%202010.pdf link to which batts were approved for use, but unfortunately, the page no longer exists. My point about this (which is why I won't let it go!) is that a USEFUL initiative was totally sabotaged for political point scoring by an opposition which is supported by the dodgy 'businessmen' who caused the problems. All the government did was offer cash to householders to improve the thermal performance of the house - they didn't supply or install anything! That was all down to good ol' private enterprise. I'm especially peeved about it as several elderly folk of my acquaintance cancelled their orders after all the scaremongering and so are still shivering/cooking in their old uninsulated houses having to pay ever larger electric bills!
I repeat my first comment - roof insulation is THE SINGLE MOST EFFECTIVE item a house can have to contribute to thermal comfort (my thesis was "Thermal Performance...")

It wasn't handled properly. That's all there is to it. The ceiling insulation industry has always been shonky. There were no checks in place at all. It was ridiculous. Whoever administered it should be shot.
