I think that the problem with the McLaren is that the parts that are not there to go fast are very generic; seems like after finishing the work at the wind tunnel they just filled the gaps between wings with a standard shape. And when they finally decided to try something, they tried too hard, like in the front lights.

But overall I wouldn´t say it´s ugly. With a more subtle colour instead of that nuclear orange and black scheme it´s going to be a lot better. And the rear is great.

BTW, I think that modern LMPs (sans the dorsal fin) look great. An old Ferrari GTO looks great. Most Group C cars look great. And none of those is even trying to look great. It´s not easy to get to that point, but beauty and perfomance can go together, and IMO in expensive cars MUST go together.

"How many horses will it have?" We're not saying.

"How much will it cost?" We can't tell you.

"How fast will it go 0-60?" We can't talk about that.

"What's the inside like?" We can't show you.

"What about the brakes?" We can't talk about them yet

Give me a ****ing break

Marketing 101. They have one shot to get this right. We probably won't see another effort like this from McLaren in ten (10) to twenty (20) years.

I really don't think this needs to be the fastest car ever made. And from where I sit $2 mil for this car is not a lot of money for the guys that are actually on the list. Think Jon Shirley or Ralph Loren would blink at 2 mil.

In the end Jim I would much rather have either of the two real P cars in your garage than the P1 and F70 combined.

I have been to hundreds of Ferrari track events over the years and never seen an enzo driven even close to the limit.

I agree and that's obviously why Ferrari will make the F70 look classically beautiful as opposed to looking like P1. That said there are buyers who want to own and drive something that looks like a cross between a Group C and an LMP1 which I think the P1 does.

I also agree about 0846 and 0854 but as beautiful as they are you really don't want to be driving them too hard because they are very fragile should you do something silly. A crash in one of those could easily be life altering.

numbers vs looks...it's all reminding me again of the 12C shenanigans... it was to be head and shoulders above all else but came in a 'safe' looking machine. it would be forgiven for not looking or sounding very exciting because it would be so much higher tech and faster than competitors such as 458. things didn't turn out that way.

Ferrari runs various expensive tests, air tunnel tests, design development...on other hand they already have developed FF/F12 engine, KERS system and a bunch of little parts that we dont see on first sight. I am wondering what is "real" price of future F70?

Classical beauty has shaped on all the best bits of functional beauty along the years.

If modern functional beauty will be relevant it will become classical beauty on its own.

In fairness I do not see either the Mac or the f70 being epic.

I almost think the porsche with its understated looks but capacity to run electric only, 4wd, 4ws and the biggest automaker behind it will win the history books.

Still I have hope in the wake of f40/959, though

I've said this many times, I'll say it again : the P1 is UGLY.

It doesn't matter how fast a car goes, if it doesn't look good as well. That's what defines a supercar : great looks/wow factor + performance. U need them both, one is worthless without the other.

The F70 is the better car. It will look amazing , plus it has a V12 that sounds a million times better than the crappy turbocharged V8 on the P1.

Hmm not liking the p1's looks means he isnt smart? So if he doesn't like what you like he's dumb? It's really clear who the real idiot is.

Personally I like the fact that there are a number of supercars with different design ideas and technologies.

These cars represent for many a life statement. In many instances they represent 10 years of development, headed by professionals who are usually quite mature in terms of experience, achievement and years.

I took it to mean that if you pass judgment on a car that has not yet been shown--the F70--then you are not very smart. Read the whole post--he is commenting and making comparisons based on a car that we have only seen in pieces.

Of course he hasn't, doing that would take all of the steam out of his armchair critiques. I'm sure mclaren will be devistated that he will not be buying a poster to put on his wall.

I'll be seeing the p1 (and sitting in it) in 2 weeks. I'm sure it'll look amazing. I'm sure the F70 will look amazing. Honestly who cares what others think, if you like it then end of story. Didn't stop me from owning an F50, and I can't even begin to tell you how many people thought that car was ugly. a lot. So what, it was a great car, and at the end of the day all it takes is 349 other people in the world to think the way you do. That's pretty likely.

Mike, the F50 is beautiful, and yours was/is a great example. I look forward to hearing your thoughts on the P1, it's very small on the inside if you ask me.

I'm expecting some restrictions about what can be said/not said based on the amount of privacy concerning the car. I know most of the details already. Fortunately I'm not weight or height challenged so that's not a problem. Personally I like smaller & lighter cars anyway as you may recall riding in my lotus exige a while back. My dd is a 997 turbo and its a good fit inside and out; I hear the P1 is about the same size as a 997 GT3. What I am interesting in seeing is the amount of storage space available for taking road trips. That was the major downside of the F50 IMO, no luggage space whatsover, so you really couldn't take it anywhere. If either the p1 of f70 has the same problem, well that's a problem. After all, these are road cars and I'd like to spend a couple days getting to/from the track, sightseeing and what not. A V12 takes up so much space, hopefully they don't cram all the fans up front and leave no space for at least a weekend duffel bag.

It's one of the last things considered in the super car world, not many 15 year old kids will argue about the storage capacity of their favorite super cars after all :). However, I think you raise a legitimate point and from what I've seen the 'F150' has the storage capacity of the Enzo, which I think is bit more than the P1 but no one has let me investigate the trunk of the P1, so I don't know for sure :). I hope all is well with you and yours, hopefully we'll see you in one of the two at the next hill climb.
