Shortly after I bought my 360, I saw that one of the 'leather' straps for the tire fix kit was broken. Not wanting to have anything out of place, I ordered a new strap the Dealer. The strap, just a strip of fake leather with no hardware was $82.00!!!! Later I bought the spare tire kit that mounts in the front bonnet and used a bunch of the same type of straps. Needless to say the straps are like vinyl covered cardboard, they are crap, and nine borke on the first day. I don't get it, expensive Italian car and no Italian leather straps????

I took the front bonnet panels out and removed all of the straps. I went to a local leather shop where they make all sorts of stuff and had new REAL Leather straps made to match as best a possible to the OEM and use the old hardware buckles and loops, stiching, etc... For a total of $200 and my time, I got 12 straps that look and work great. Now I can cinch tight all of the gear and not worry.

By the way, most of the straps are pop-riveted in and can be easily drilled out.

Your strap setup is quite different... I just have one large strap in the front and 2 holding the can of fix-a-flat... what are all the others for? My owners manual is inside the car not in the boot...

Yeah, I've got the OEM spare tire in addition to the fix-a-flat kit and my strap setup also looks different. I don't have the front pair that you are using to hold the manuals and white towel roll. Did you add that one on yourself? What is in the rolled up towel?

oops, no, i just saw the ACTUAL rolled up towel!

If its like my car, probably a bottle of spray-detailer to get any bird poo or bugs off and a towel to wipe it

But isn't the beige bundle at the rear of the bonnet the fix-a-flat can? The tire rests on a bracket just above the beige bundled fix-a-flat. So he's got something different going on.

really good tips here, but to take it a step further, the Scud has a nice leather sort of box for the pump and tyre kit but the Strad only has the beige bundle. When I first saw it I thought the original was missing it looks so inappropriate. The Scud box would fit but I don't even want to know the dealer price. Has anyone made up one of these?

When you drill out the pop rivets, did you remove the panels or leave them in place.

    Thanks,

On my MY2000 360 coupe, the bottom carpeted trunk panel was riveted to the trunk tub metal
this also held the bottom strap for the tool kit.

When I replace the strap I am just going to rivet it to the carpet panel itself, not to the trunk metal for easy removal in the future. The bottom trunk panel is not going anywhere if it is not riveted to the tub.

    BTW-

I got all 6 of the straps redone in real leather, using the original hardware, for $30.....
Yes - $30 plus tax, $32 and change, total cost for all 6 straps - hard to believe......
I could of had new chrome hardware for $15 more, stuck with the oem-
Considering someone on F-chat wants $145 for them, and Ricambi wants even more for the original crappy ones....

The secret is to go to a horse tack and saddle shop, I got mine done at Ballards in Norco here in So. Cal. - dropped the originals in the morning, done that afternoon.

I just saw a rivet gun/ kit at Harbor Freight for $8 - so for around $40 I get all new real leather straps in my trunk and a rivet kit for future projects.

    Hey Fellas,

Did a search on this topic as I want to replace the worn out vinyl holding straps inside of my luggage compartment. I've decided to take a little more hands-on DIY approach to solving some of the minor "cosmetic" issues on the car.

I've found a local tack shop which can create the straps for me. But I'm not sure how I'll go about installing them. Can anyone who has done this before explain the proper procedure for removing the old straps and their mounting hardware (I've read about drilling out the pop rivets, I can do that) AND ALSO installing the new straps with the appropriate mounting methods? Do any panels need to be removed for access behind the carpet to secure the new straps?

Thanks, and sorry to bring back an old thread. If I've missed an old thread with the procedure, I apologize, and if you have a link, I'd appreciate sharing it.

    Raj

    Raj,

On mine the manual strap in the front compartment is held on by a couple pillips screws. Can't remember the air can straps.. if riveted might have to take off the panel on the rear of the front compartment to get access to drill them out.

    Shouldn't be a biggy...

I've been searching for an identical womans belt to install in its place..

Probably a bunch of ways to solve this. When I was a kid we used to do a lot of leather working and used this company a lot. I cant vouch for their quality anymore but it was first rate back in the day. Maybe someone could benefit from this link?

I just replaced my straps as I had the very same problem with my original spare tire straps. I am preparing to reinstall the straps but wanted to check to see if anyone knew the correct sized rivets to use? I've found at least 3 sizes at my local big box store. thanks much

The adapter in my rivet gun is 1/8" and the straps are the last thing I did about a month ago. I did have to drill out the metal plates just a bit though. Keep in mind, this is not to be taken as absolute rock hard fact though...your methods may very, etc, etc, etc.
