Convincing reasons to buy an RS4??

My dad is looking for a new car possibly this summer and is considering the A4's. I however would like him to uprgrade to an RS4 (Currently driving a 2010 Toyota Sequoia Platinum with 100,000 on the odo.). What reasons coud I tell him to consider this. He's not much of a gear head and doesn't want something flashy so I thought this would be a good choice. Thanks!

 

If he's not a gear head he won't see the benefit of the RS4 over the A4. My guess is it will be tough to convince him. Best of luck.

 

There's also the small consideration that if he lives in the usa, he can't get a new one........legally.

Couple of years old, OK. But if he's not a gear head, why bother? An A4, or maybe an S4, will provide plenty of practical and fun.

Parker here is trying to get Dear Old Dad to buy a car that Young Parker can have fun with while at the same time Dear Old Dad won't know the difference.

Dear Old Dad wants an Avalon. I know for a fact that I will not get his next car. I do feel its his time to get a fun car though!

 

How does she hold up? Reliability issues are a huge concern for my dad. Also needs to dela with snow pretty well.

 

An Audi quattro will be the greatest car in snow - as long as you equip it with proper winter tires. Use all-seasons, and it will just be OK... it will go all right, but will be just as bad as any other car on all-seasons when it comes to corners or braking. Winter tires are the key.

Is your Dad OK with a manual trans? The 07-08 RS4 never came with an automatic trans. Even then, how often do you think he'd be using the 6K - 8.2K rpm range? If he's never going to rev over 6K rpm when accelerating, then you might as well get an S4, as the power and torque curves are identical to the RS4 below 6K rpm. The only advantage to the RS4 engine is above 6K rpm.

I have an 07 S4 (Avant) 6 speed manual, and love it. The interior is identical to the RS4 in N America trim, and as I mentioned the power is the same below 6K rpm.

Leave Dad alone and get a 04 S4 with the good ol' V8 for cheap and have fun...without having to ask for the keys!

 

Considered the older s4 but I dont know how he feels about a 9 year old car. Also, he probably wont even go over 4000. Dads only 45 and im only 14. No offense to any A4 owners buts its more of a femmy car IMO so if no RS4....I think he'll move on to the A6, 7, or 8.

 

No offense, but you're not paying attention. UpNorth suggested the 04 S4 for you, not your father.

If your father is considering an RS4, then those were sold in the 2007 and 2008 model years in the Audi B7 chassis. That same, nearly identical car was sold in 2007 and 2008 in an S4 version as I suggested, with the identical interior and identical power below 6K rpm. If he is thinking of an RS4, then he could also be considering an S4 of the exact same 2007 - 2008 vintage. NOT 9 years old just because it's an S4.

If YOU think an S4 or an A4 is a "femmy car", then YOU have a lot to learn about cars. Your father is right to not trust your recommendations, if that's the sort of stupid nonsense you're providing to him. An A6, A7, or A8? Totally different than an RS4 - again, do you understand what you're talking about? How is someone considering a manual-trans only car like an RS4, also considering an "old man" car in automatic trans only like the A6, A7, or A8, with big fat lounger seats, soft cushy suspension, and no sport at all?

 

I was only saying 9 years to the 04 suggestion. Maybe im wrong about the A4 being a femmy car but I do not consider the s4 a femmy car. Hes looking for a price range of 30k-55k (with a 25k trade-in). He could easily spend more but needs a convincing reason. I totally respect your opinion and youve provided great answers but considering my dad changes his opinion on cars he wasnt every few weeks, O need a solid reason to present the RS4 to him.

 

I can say with confidence that the Rs4 has been one of the most reliable cars I've owned, including wear items.

@60k miles and 2 carbon services later ( each @ 30k miles ) it's low key ( doesn't scream pull me over ) when it needs to be, but push the "S"button on the dash ( S=Stupid per my wife, because anytime I push it she knows I'm about to do something stupid, LoL )

It's a comfortable car that can be driven daily, when put side by side an A4/S4 there is no mistaking what car is what.

Now, with this being said, an Rs4 is for the Audi purest, for those in the know. If your car could care less, then I'd leave the Rs4 to those that WANT one and get him into a later model S4 or even better, S6 < wink >

My buddy had an RS4 for less than a year. It spent so much time in the shop with crazy electrical issues, that he dumped it for the M3.

One of the trips to the shop, it was at the dealership for 2 weeks and they couldn't nail down the issue.

Not sure if all of the Audi's are like that - but have Dad try the S4 or the BMW 335 - or 535.
The new Jags are not flashy either.

 

That's not the first time I've heard a story about an Audi like that or VW for that matter. A buddy of mine had a B5 S4 and it was in the shop for quite a while as well during the time he had it. Similar for a 2003-ish SL55 AMG another friend had. German cars can be a pita when it comes to maintenance.

Interesting stories. Having come from BMW ( Nightmare ) and going to Audi , I would say that Audi had half the real world issues BMW did ( which is why I left BMW for Audi ) but in the end, they are all cars, and they all have issues, it all about how those issues are addressed. Oh, I've worked with Mercedes for many years as well....

And to think, I thought Ferrari would be less problematic than either... < wink >

Back in the late 90s and early 2000s, my family had an E38 740iL and R129 SL 500 and both gave a lot of problems. As much as I love BMW, I would only lease the cars to not have to deal with the hassle of them out of warranty. The pre-1990 cars like the E30 and E28 I would own, though, no problem.

The B5 S4 I mentioned before was a year 2000. I think luxury car reliability has gotten better across the board since that time. At least I'd hope.

 

I've had a few Audis, and overall have been extremely satisfied with their reliability and durability.

First was a 2002 allroad, with manual trans - we owned that for 5.5 years, and had exactly 3 issues that required service repair, and only one issue needed it's own service visit (the turn signal flasher relay failed, so the turn signals didn't blink reliably. Certainly never stranded the car!).

That car was replaced by our current 2007 S4 Avant, manual trans. We've now owned it for 5.5 years, and it has not required a single non-scheduled service visit, and I can't recall any failures of any single item. Just routine maintenance, with absolutely zero issues.

I also have a 2010 S5, again manual trans. Again, it has not had a single issue, just routine service. Both our current Audis have been extremely reliable, and I much prefer their interior design and quality to BMW's offerings, and the Audi AWD is superior to BMW's also.

That's something best found on Google and will vary anyway depending the way one drives. It really shouldn't be part of the equation when purchasing either car imo as they aren't geared toward saving the environment.

 

Believe me, if I were president, the average mpg of a car would have to be above .05. But however, gas aint cheap. I would need a # to present to him.

 

If you need convincing for an RS4, you don't need an RS4, simple enough.

 

Look at www.edmunds.com . You can find their original data sheets for cars going back 10 - 15 years, including their EPA ratings.

 

It's all in your right foot.... I personally went as low as 9mpg on track and as high as 24mpg on the highway, normal in town driving was 19-21mpg
