My passenger side head light quit popping up this weekend. The light works, but does not pop up. My other light pops up fine. Did a quick search and found where both don't work - which could be a different problem. Where should I start? And no, there is not a stripper sitting on my headlight preventing it from popping up. As I recall without having the wiring diagrams in front of me, there's a separate relay for each of the headlight motors. Swap the relays and see if the behavior changes.
Can you hear the motor running trying to pop it up on the affected side or no? If no, probably what Tillman suggested.
Twist stalk and the master relay provides voltage to the R.H. and L.H. lift relays. They send voltage to the lift motors to raise or lower. A set of contacts at the motor make the decision. With headlight switch off, these relays continue to maintain voltage at the lift motors to insure they go down and stay down. So, It's either a relay or contacts at the motor or connectors in between. As Tillman suggested, reverse b and e and see if the problem reverses. If not, chase the contacts/connectors. Check the ground wire for the pod. My old '85 308 did the same thing and I found that the ground wire had come loose. This immediately fixed the problem.
Ok - swapped relays and the right one still is a no go. I don't even hear it trying. The ground wire was tight. I guess the motor is out? Do I have to take the whole front end off to replace that? Anyone know the price of a motor? Sounds like time for a donation to a mechanic. my
Below is the relevant portion of the headlight pod 'PopsUp' circuitry from my drawing package. Note the diodes and contacts at the motor. Voltage is fed to the circuit when the key is turned to 'Run'. That voltage insures the motor closes the pod to down position. When the headlight stalk is twisted, relay 75 gets exercised with voltage from the 'up' contacts in the pod. The motor gets voltage from the relay contacts until it is fully up, the contacts switch, relay turns off and the motor voltage ceases. The relay only gets exercised through good set of diodes and contacts. Otherwise the relay doesn't close and the motor doesn't get it's juice to go up. In cases where the headlight pod fails to raise and the relays/fuses are good and contacts are ok, chances are the diode has failed. Those items are suspect but more often than not, a diode has failed. So, examine the pod closely and find the diodes, change both. Radio Shack 1N4004 diodes work fine - cost $1. When replacing them, note the position of the white band at one end of the doide...and solder the new one in the same way - critical. Note - The difference between 1 amp 1N4001, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 diodes is reverse voltage and higher is NOT better. The 1N4002 (100v) is adequate but the 1N4004 (400V) is more commonly found. The diode only carries voltage to switch the relay coil and it's 1 amp capacity is also plenty adequate. The light that would not pop up is now working. Turns out - there is a knob on top off the headlamp motor. You can turn that knob to make the light come up manually. Once that was done, it started working again. So it appears to have been a sticky motor problem. I now make sure I use the headlights on every drive to keep them in good working order. If you don't use it - you're gonna lose it! Just turned over 30000 miles this weekend. Also had some minor work done at Sphere Motorsports in Houston - new hoses etc... All worked well this weekend. I think - most of the time the issue is not the motor.. I mean how much use does it really get... its the little lever that actually moves the light pod up and down. mine came loose and I found the retaining bolt on the fiberglass flange just below the light. I would check that first. My guess is that if you use the manual knob, you may have got the lever to move again, but the bolt may be loose and will cause the light to not "pop" up again. If you can move the headlight with your hands while the car is not running... its the lever. - actuator arm etc...
Which is why it's better to diagnose when possible by swapping relays to see if the problem swaps. Then replace with new. Bad new components exist and can be terrible frustrating to find as you continually discount the new one's failure to work as expected.
With snow on the ground it's high time to tackle the list of winter work. I have Paul's wiring diagrams but wondering if anyone has pics of replacing a diode in the headlight motor (the gt4 having what seems to be the same motor as a regular 308). I have the target motor out, cleaned up and have opened it but can't obviously see the diode - at least looking like what i have from radioshack. How many diodes are there per motor? Where are they located? As a background, PO has run the headlight motors off one relay, the other motor works perfectly, there is power to the non working motor so as Paul has suggested in the past then perhaps a diode replacement is where it's at. No. Remove the grills behind the lights (4 phillips head screws each side - be careful not to drop them). Then get both lights popped up and remove the shrouds - I think that's 3 phillips heads on each side of each pod. You will be amazed at how much access you have created! The grille screws go into some body clips that you need to align before replacing. I've replaced relays after swapping them - sounds like that's not your problem. Never had to replace diodes, etc. but I've had good results spraying WD40 on the moving parts like the lever arm bushes on the rods that push the pods up and down. Sometimes this is the dreaded "intermittant" problem. Mine seem sensitive to temperature and humidity - same with the door latches!?!
Trying to puzzle out my one headlight motor not rising issue. Dan above referred to a post showing the diode location. My car is a 75 gt4 and looking at the motor it looks different from what has been earlier posted. here is the front and the reverse of that panel at the top of the motor where the wires come in - no visible diodes on the front side. Have tried an electrical motor workshop (very Dickensian so I had my hopes up) and they could establish that one of the circuits was open when the motor was together but not beyond that. I suspect that perhaps that circuit wasn't engaged at the time (by the little needles on the back matching with a point on the gear sprocket internally?). They referred me on to another shop which was a dead end. I have the radio shack diodes but no place to put them - can anyone point me in the right direction? I'd happily send the motor off for repair too but it seems these days you'd have as may as well be asking for a replacement lamp for you stage coach... Image Unavailable, Please Login

Thanks for taking an interest Dan - a PO had converted the relay panel so that there is just one relay to lift headlights and the other headlamp raises so I assuming the relay works

Guy, I have searched the forum and haven't found a solution to your issue. You might want to start a new thread with a heading that is specific to your issue. Some members may have glanced over this thread thinking it was only specific to the 328 model. Hopefully that way you will gain additional views that may lead to a solution.
