When I start the car cold I always hear a high-pitched whine coming from the engine, which goes away after about 1-2 minutes. It isn't loud but I always notice it. Is this typical? A pump that runs for a brief period or something? Thanks for any insight.

Its the exhaust air injection system, totally normal. It is designed to reduce emissions by helping the cats light off sooner.

I've always wondered what that noise is too. Thanks for the info.

You may see some cars, especially 2.7's where this system has been removed when the owner has removed the cats..also many European cars were not equipped with it from Ferrari at all.

I have a 2.7 car with a Tubi and it has the whine as well on cold start. At first I thought it was a problem, but when I realized that the noise went away each time no more than a few minutes after cold start and never came back, I just chalked it up to normal engine warm up. Nice to know exactly what it is now!

Can also be used as a handy warmup timer. When the pump switches off I drive off, of course not cutting loose until engine is up to normal operating temp.
