What is amazing to me is that The Mayor's provocative post can still kick off 100 replies and nearly 3000 visits in three days. Good for him. He keeps the juices flowing.

But I will keep our 3-pedal F430, my windup Glashutte Original, and Visconti fountain pen AND the 458, Porsche Design quartz watch, and a crummy ballpoint to use when the fountain pen leaks. :)

Exactly, a stick shift is fun, and actually, a lot of fun,(except in traffic) but if you want the best performance money can buy, it has to be a dual clutch transmission. I know I am repeating myself, but just look at Formula 1 and IRL race cars, no third pedal in them.

Exactly. The next paddle system and box will always make the older ones feel like crap. A good 3 pedal manual is timeless and I think cars like the Ford GT, Carrera GT etc will bear that out. Both of those cars would be worse off today if they only came with paddle boxes that already feel slow, like the Merc SLS.

Some say that those cars are too modern, with traction control, power steering and too much electronic stuff and plastic bits. Some say that old cars with wire wheels and carburetors are the real deal.

I think that old tehcnology is OK in old cars. Nobody will put a clutch pedal and a stick shift in 2030 in the same way that nobody would put carburetors and wire wheels in a modern car.

I like old cars with carburetors and wire wheels, but the world moves on.

In 2030 I'll want a car that performs kidney dialysis while I sit in traffic.

I agree with you but I am talking about long-term collectibility. Carbed boxers are more sought after than non-carbed. I'm not saying the 458 or Mac 12C or SLS should have a manual instead of paddles. What I am saying is that 10-15 years from now when their DCT boxes feel slow, clunky and outdated compared to the next generation of paddle boxes, 3 pedal versions of those cars would be highly sought after. The Scud's transmission is still relevant, for now, but how about the 575M's F1? And how lovely would a CS with a 3 pedal be? I'm saying it is sad that 10-15 years from now we will not have the choice but to get a 458, Mac or SLS with a DCT. Nobody will be buying these cars for everyday use at that point so most of the DCT's advantages won't matter. The cars won't be fast compared to the current offerings of the time either so really nobody is going to care that the DCT made the car faster. In 15 years, guys with extra cash lying around to collect cars - 55 to 65 yr olds - will still have all grown up driving 3-pedal sports cars. Not having the choice will make all of these cars less collectible. Maybe once the old guys are weeded out and all you have left is the guys who never drove a 3 pedal manual - so say guys that are 20 yrs old right now, they might want to collect an old paddle box car. But can you imagine how crappy a 35-45 year old DCT paddle box is going to feel at that point? p.s. even an old gated Ferrari that was hard to shift still has some charm and challenge to mastering it. An old paddle system just feels slow and there is nothing to master, to get the best out of. Just pull the paddle and (try to) enjoy an outdated shift.

Well it will be interesting to come back here when driverless cars are mandated for safety and traffic congestion reasons and see if people are calling those that like to drive whiners.

Since we are on the topic of whiny, how about complaining about whiny posters who start topics whining about useless stuff?

I am positive many users of this forum are more tired of that, than hearing about people who wish Ferrari still made a 3 speed.

My reply is not guided towards anyone, what I find silly is f-chat is a forum dedicated to driving enthusiasts, how or why any pure car nut would complain or cry about a manual 3 speed car is comical.

While some people will have a preference towards F-1 shifting, any TRUE car fan will still enjoy the fun and excitement a manual car brings to the table.

While in theory a manual might not be as fast, it clearly brings tons of fun and enjoyment to any driver. If speed is the only thing that matters then we would all be driving supped up turbo charged nissan skyline cars. In other words more to it then speed, the feel and excitement a car creates is what matters most imo. The more a driver can connect with a car equals more fun. This is why I think 3 pedal manual cars will always be desirable.

Again while some prefer the auto f-1 style that fine, but to suggest people who like a manual as whiny is pointless imo and very insulting to many users on this forum that clearly enjoy sport driving in the purest form.

I don't recall reading any whining posts, but your post kind of crows not only about the car but your superior assessment of it. I agree, from a pure performance point of view that dual clutch automated manual transmissions are better and I doubt any of the "whiners" disagree.

I think some people lament the lack of CHOICE. Maybe we are in a TIME where CHOICE should give way to what is "BEST."
I respect the desire for choice and the wishes of those who would choose a manual. I understand how driving is an activity where you use your skills and coordination to operate the car. Porsche gives a choice for all these reasons and more.

For the record, I'd have to have the automated manual because I favor the best performance beyond all else, but I sure would not whine about those who want a manual or crow about how great my car is and antiquated their choice would be.

Final answer to what? You really want a Borge Warner Turbo Hydromatic in 458 like a Chevy Camaro?

If so, I think this is my final answer.

No, they don't lament the lack of choice. They cannot deal with REALITY. The reality is the public has spoken and they lost.

They just can't believe it. Here's whining:

"Will Ferrari ever make another manual box again?"

Why not start a thread "will Ferrari ever make another car without power steering?"
or "without ABS"? or "without carburetors?" Sniff, sniff.

These threads and comments pilfer Fchat like powdered sugar on a waffle and have since Ferrari said it wasn't making any more manuals 4 years ago. Isn't 4 years enough? Why not go to a Mac forum and whine that Mac doesn't offer one either? Or Zonda?

As to Porsche, yes it's true it is the last hold out. Porsche makes 10 times the cars a year that Ferrari makes. It's easier to justify. But, even Porsche dealers tell you they can't move manual cars anymore. The writing is on the wall....

The public also spoke and voted in Obama (again). I am sure from now on, regardless of context, whenever I see/hear something like "the public has spoken" my sphincter will tighten and my mouth run amuck I just hope we still can drive a car a few years from now.Best

Ah, my shadow has spoken. I suppose I'm supposed to cower now that the giant bat has appeared standing in silhouette on a high building over Gotham

Here's a clue before you throw your bat posts at me:

    Read my first post.

I said I like manuals. My next car will be a classic with a manual. I currently own a manual car for my daily driver. My issue is that the 3 pedalers can't understand the purpose of the 458 package and why we owners appreciate it.

It's not a knock against 3 pedal owners. It's a not against people whining that there aren't enough people out there anymore who want them to justify making them if you're a low volume manufacturer.

The 458 works incredibly well with the DCT.

Now, my point to this thread has been proven.

Instead of a discussion of how well this car works and it's purpose, the usual suspects come out and complain that someone has the audacity to actually tell 3 pedal people that the 458 is a better car without one.

    Your move, Batman.

There's as much in common with political designs and consumer or business decisions as there is with an apple and an orange and a pear.

They don't make Stubebakers anymore. I actually like Studebakers but they didn't sell enough of them to justify it. Consumers spoke.

Should I whine that they are gone or should I celebrate what they were?

    I think the latter.

I don't think any reasonable 3-pedaler disputes that the 458 is great given the parameters it was designed to. Nor can they dispute the DCT car's dominance in performance comparisons. I think they/we simply use different standards to evaluate sports cars, such standards being subjective by nature.

Again and again, reasonable 3-pedalers have made clear that they're willing to give up some performance for what they consider a higher level of interaction, hopefully with a car that incorporates other modern techs even though it's a rower.

Where's the problem, why are we wasting time worrying about the 3-pedalers that aren't rational enough to see things this way?

Actually, KV was exactly right. Lamenting the lack of choice is exactly what I am doing. I wish all these manufacturers would at least keep manual as an option so that in 10-15 years time, if I decided to pick one up for my collection, I could seek out a 3-pedal car. I'm not saying Ferrari or Mac or Merc are dumb for not offering it. I'm simply lamenting the lack of choice. That makes me a whiner or not living in reality? If we met at a cocktail party and I said I'd love if there was 3-pedal challenge stradale would you reply as rudely as you do here and say 'sniff, sniff' and call me a whiner. I sure hope not so why here? Is it so hard to understand how people can take offence to your post.

It's OK to lament that manufactures don't make certain stuff anymore. I lament that you can't get a high performance car without carburetors.

But, there isn't a post a week about how awful it is we can't get them anymore or how "I'll never buy another Ferrari again because they don't have carburetors".

What's wrong is saying that things like Direct Injection are superior to carbs. We get less emissions, better fuel economy, and 575 HP out of the 458 box because of it. Should we lament that it doesn't have carbs and only would get 400 HP and only get 5 MPG?

Sure, you can't hear the carbs "suck" air anymore and a FI system looks much less sexy than 4 weber carbs. I love the look of a set of carbs on a classic Ferrari. Sex on wheels. Today's black boxes are boring. And, you can't tinker with Fuel Injection you can a set of carbs.

But look what you get in return. Doesn't that have value also? Would the 458 be a better car with Carbs? Im sure some here would say so but I've never seen a discussion about that because most of agree that Fuel Injection IS better.

Go back to 1979 and ask Ferrari owners the same question. You'll get a much different answer.

Yes, I lament that there aren't carbs on cars anymore. I just don't whine about it.

I noticed you post often, and surely know what happens (action/reaction). I cannot believe you hit the keyboard and expect agreement and/or accolades every time you opine. It seems few are critical of the 458 "package", as some might be regarding the relatively antiseptic driving experience of the Porsche 997 Twin Turbo, as technologically advanced and as fast as it might be (I own one). Most seem to exhibit a degree of nostalgia, even melancholy for things no more, and with good reason. You can't go home again.

I believe few here would actually spend $300,000 for a three pedal 458, but for those who wish they could, I "feel" for them. I really enjoy my "paddles", and like you (seemingly one of the fortunate), can ("choose" to) drive a "stick".

All of us, the bulls, bears, and even the bats, can turn and twist any topic in virtually any direction. I find myself doing the same on occassion, curious to see what it illicits.. I have learned a great deal from this forum , from you and others, and have tried to contribute as well. It serves a myriad of other purposes as well. Best
