My car is with Bradan for a front bumper respray and a few other minor things . . . mainly sorting out the suspension and an issue with an out of balance wheel. While there, I asked Dan to give my car a few pulls on his chassis dyno.

From the graph, peak hp at wheels (highest of 3 runs) was ~250 hp @7200 rpm. Using the mis-used 15% drivetrain loss rule-of-thumb indicates 294 hp at the crank, or 312 hp if 20% drivetrain losses assumed. I don't have more details regarding the dyno pulls other than the graph shown, though if there are questions perhaps Dan from Bradan will chime in.

My car is a bone stock '94 348 "factory" Challenge car. Stock muffler, cats . . . everything, right down to the air filter. Car has just under 25k miles.

I was somewhat disappointed with the result, though it seems reasonable. I was hoping for peak hp in the 260-270 range, which at the upper end might have been a bit optimistic. Anyway, just thought I'd post for the Brotherhood as yet another reference point.

I think I need to get in touch with Ernie at some point about trying to eke another 20-30 hp out of the ol' gal.

That seems like a fairly normal power band. What kind of dyno does Braden have?

Good question. I wasn't there (was jammed at work) when Bradan did the dyno testing. I was hoping that Dan at Bradan would eventually see this thread and chime in.

Dan told me that in his experience, my car tested out as one would've expected given that it's completely stock. I believe he commented that the highest peak HP that he's seen on a 348 was ~280, but the car was modified.

I have to go back and read through some of your threads on getting a bit more power out of the engine.

I'll just tell you what you can do.

    1) High flow, metal core, 200 cell cats
    2) Free flow muffler
    3) Ported intake runners
    4) Tapper ported throttle bodies

    All good. Add:

    5. remove MAF screens
    6. replace air filter with free flow equivalent (not KN or anything else oiled)
    7. make sure your injectors are clean (mine aren't so I want to see if this matters)

When you are looking at an exhaust replacement, try for something simple, single can with an "X" pipe design. In fact, just ask gothspeed to make you one complete with cats. It will literally bolt on.

However, if your car was put on a Dynajet, your results are not too far off of mine as modified. I went to 256 with my adds; this was 300 on a Dynapack. Remember that the absoulte numbers are essentially meaningless and you are looking at comparative differences. So, make sure that after your mods, you use the same dyno. Personally, given our experience, I'd make sure you started and ended with a Dynapack. It takes tire considerations out of the picture.

Also get your fuel/air readings. My initial reaction was that your rpm range is skewed low since your car should have a 7500 red line with a 7800 fuel cut off.

Keeping with what Vince said, on a Dynapack I made 305, and on a Dyno Dynamics I did 260 (259.9 actually). There is a place here that has a Dynojet and I wanna get in a pull on that one. So that is why I asked what kind of dyno Bradan has. That way it can be and apples to apples comparison.

Seems to be really good numbers for a Mustang brand dyno which I believe is what Bradan use, nice flat torque there. Understand the Mustang-type dynos read a solid 7% lower than dynojet dynos. So with a dynojet you're probably in the mid 260s which is about right for a challenge car. Gosh 348s really need more torque though!

From the pic on their web site, it indeed appears to be a Mustang.

Agreed, more torque . . . or less weight. Cheaper to achieve the latter (up to a point) than the former.

Yeah - here's my 348 Dyno graph on Dan's Dyno:

    http://ferrarichat.com/forum/showpost.php?p=141256992&postcount=363

Mine has test pipes & challenge exhaust. The Carbon Fiber Airbox was installed after the dyno and I doubt it has any effect on HP.

    Thanks,
    Erik

Erik, when you say Challenge exhaust, do you mean #1 or #5 from diagram in following link?

    http://www.ricambiamerica.com/parts_catalogs.php?M=FE&P=&V=diag&I=3168

I have #1 in my car. Curious if you have the small Challenge track silencer. If so, then that thing has to be L-O-U-D.

If your car has the same silencer as my car, then the only delta is that I'm running stock cats and you have test pipes (that, and the general condition of our engines could be different). Seems to hint at that there might be more power in substituting cats for straight pipes than I would have thought - or that my cats maybe are getting old and have become restrictive with time/mileage.

I have #1 as well - off of a challenge track car - even with the straight pipes it's quieter than my Mondial with X-OST exhaust.

    I see.

I thought maybe it had been raced because of the power yours made, but you where just commenting on the type of muffler you had on it.

The only difference between stock & mine is the straight pipes and the exhaust.

    Thanks,

Which goes back to something I said earlier, i.e. there's a noticeable hp difference going from stock cats to straight pipe given that we have the same silencer and our cars were tested on the same brand dyno. Of course your engine could be a bit healthier than mine, plus variables in testing conditions etc. Not surprised that there's some difference, just surprised by the magnitude.

Only real way for me to know would be to go to straight pipes and retest on Bradan's dyno. That would be an interesting exercise, i.e. component-by-component changes followed by dyno testing after each revision. Not practical given the expense, but interesting.

Let me see if I can hunt down the exact pipes I bought - to make it really interesting.

    Thanks,

I know for a fact that lighter wheels and tires will yield more bhp at the wheels on a dyno. Flywheel Bhp itself won't change, just the amount lost going through the drivetrain to the tires will be reduced.

Stock 348 rims with average weight tires are usually somewhere around 52lbs. Reduce that just 7lbs each side and you will see a improvement of say around 7-8bhp. Figure .5bhp lost per additional pound of rotating mass on the axle ie. wheel/tire weight.

Removing emissions equipment is illegal but will give you the most power hands down on any car.

I think Eriks put down so much power because of the fresh valve job, cleaned injectors, and removed cats.

We have a Mustang MD-250 chassis Dyno.

    AH HA!
Thanks for sharing the info, that was very nice of you.

Now it makes sence. I can totally believe those kind of power gains with a nice valve job. Especially if they did a nice job on the angles and a bit to shaping to the ports.

    Where the stock valves reused?

Here is my Mondial T 3.4l dyno before/after (the light blue line) a tune by Competizione. The bottom lines (red, blue and brown) are with a free lowing exhaust only. In this configuration, the engine lost mid-range torque but gained power over 5700 rpm. The tune got all the torque back - and then some - and also increased a little bit the hp. The green and red lines in the middle are the original dyno prior to exhaust modifications and tune.

    TQ went from 244.3 @ 5824 to 251.9 @ 4204.

Exhaust for that dyno: Stebro w/test pipe.

    268 hp + 15% (power train losses) = ± 315 hp

Competizione then installed a pair of Hyper Flow. Power is now down to 263.4 hp, or ±310 hp if we remove the power train losses.

I do not exactly remember. I travel abroad extensively, so when the T visits Competizione, it may be there for several weeks at a time.
