I was gonna mention this earlier but I did not want to come off as presumptious as a non-owner. I was thinking that a mold from the OEM housing would need to be cast and this logic stems from limited production numbers of the 288 aswell as keeping it as a personal project/offering.

    Just a random thought.

Cool story! I believe Lauda said in his book that he asked the factory to make him one after the run was completed. I'll see if I can find it.
When my wife & i did our factory tour in march they had a 288 on the floor of the building where the engines were constructed (I think that was the building)
I didn't get the serial number

It would shock me if joe didn't know the serial number of the 288 on display at the factory.

Thanks for the sentiments, but I know far less than I don't know! I'm working on that though.

Is that the same material as what we have in the F40?

I have been in two 288GTO's with red inserts but I am 99% sure that they were red leather inserts, not cloth.

Normally it is cloth, yes, Momex like the F40, a previous series which fades badly.

2 cars I'm aware of came from the factory with red leather seat inserts, whilst the vast majority have black leather seat inserts as part of their all-black (8500) interior.

I think I read somewhere they bought it in for c £750...which might be off the mark as it seems a lot before they sell it on

Was one of those a car originally delivered to Lee Iacocca and then later sold to a collector in NorCal because that was one of the cars I was in (hope I'm remembering the history correctly).

A good friend owns one of the cars with red leather seat inserts here in Southern California just a few minutes from me, but I cant say if it was ever delivered to Lee Iaccocca, although it was delivered to the USA in 1985.

The other car I'm aware of was delivered new to Scotland, featured in a memorable CAR magazine article where the owner details his even more memorable discussion with the factory to get them to do the red leather seat inserts. If I remember correctly, Ferrari SpA's exact words upon receiving his specific-order request were: "Impossible". Nevertheless, after some 'encouragement' the car way delivered the was he wanted. It now resides with an enthusiast & FChatter in the UK..

PS - I meant to say "Nomex" in my previous post!

    Welcome to our humble thread!

I have pics of that car's interior taken at Maranello because the photographer thought the it was 'different'.
