So when looking under the hood, I saw these strange sand cast? pieces bolted on, and jutting from the main intake manifold. Generally, Ferrari make it their intakes beautiful, but it just ends up looking awkward, and out of place.

    the WSJ says
Is it more about the sound, or is there a significant performance bonus? is the Induction sound piped into the cabin like cars seem to be doing these days more and more?

The extensions are for the variable length intakes. It is a technology now banned in F1 but that was where Ferrari first used it. It was first used on a Ferrari road car by way of the F50 I believe. I'm not sure if the acoustics where tuned with these but they are definitely an important part of the power and tractibility of the engine

Agreed. Thanks Ferrari. I specifically remember this because those resonators stuck in my head and I was very curious as to what they were.

    Yes, thank you sir. :)

The other thing that may be worth noting about this is that given the front mid engine set of the V12, and the long snoot of the body, there is plenty of under-the-hood room to accommodate these air handling enhancements.

Graphic on close examination does not explain much. Not variable length intake, its a fixed length so just tuned for a certain rpm where the supercharging effect works. Unless there is a valve that opens and closes at a certain rpm to change the length. e.g. as on the humble 550 and its butterfly valves. The F12 parts diagram does not show any valves, just fixed tube. For fuller explanation of the supercharging effect with longer intake runners tuned to a certain rpm see

The Enzo and La Ferrari have fully variable length set up. See the parts diagrams or the first video.
    Regards,
    Dr. Ron
