Charter a DC3 to Oshkosh and FCA 2013 Elkhart Lake Road America

Anyone know where you can charter a DC3 in the eastern us? Long shot idea, but I though it would be cool to Charter a DC3 to fly into Oshkosh-as we attend the 50th FCA International meet at Elkhart Lake/Road America Ferrari Club of America 2013 International Meet. We will get a truck together to take the cars (F40, Daytona, Scuderia, 348 Challenge so far) and meet them in Elkhart Lake, but do plan to spend a few days going back and forth to Oshkosh.

I did some internet searching and found one near Atlanta. Interesting enough, he said he was the one that organized the big fly in to EAA a few years back and I can forget about finding one-I'm 20 years late. I called another guy in FL and he is selling his as it has spar corrosion. Side Story-"Ice Pilots" was in the process of purchasing the plane, and he was going to cut the wings off with a saw and make a display out of it but the deal fell through! $75,000 buys it.

I have yet to contact the air museum in Charlotte, so perhaps that will work as they have a gorgeous DC3.

Any contacts will be appreciated. I think we may have a number of FCA members, and perhaps local EAA members that may take an interest in this adventure.

Here is the latest FAA registry for DC-3 (and variants). Start calling. Another route to whittle down the list is to contact the EAA and ask if they can provide a list of those aircraft that participated in the 2010 fly-in.

I think there might be one or two DC-3s in charter service. The reinforced cockpit door rule pretty much removed the DC-3 from passenger service, since it has too high a useful load to operate under 135 and you can't make the door work for 121.

Some people may have reduced the takeoff weight enough to operate it under 135, but I'm not sure if anyone has actually done this or not.

There are a fair number of private passenger configured DC-3s (3 of them in my area alone), but they can't be operated for hire.

 

the reality of using a DC-3 is they are slow about 150 mph, kind of like a Cessna 182, fun ride, could be an all day event depending on where you start...after a couple of hours everyone will get antsy to get there...regardless of how much catering you bring on board

 

That's what I was afraid of. I prefer 500 MPH or better when going any distance.

I think there is an airline that flies only the DC-3. It may be outside the US though. I'm thinking down south.

It fills a certain market niche.

 

It wasn't us trying to turn it into a display. The CBC was poking around for one to use as a set for "Arctic Air". They ended up going with a different aircraft.

 

We run the only scheduled DC-3 passenger service left in the world up here in Yellowknife.

There's others doing charter work and such though.

 

I'm afraid, as well, you may be right unless we get some real aviation enthusiast, and even at that I can hear our X-Plane man Austin Meyer saying "boring". The Cheyenne IIIA last year was very fast for a prop job, and only 2.5 hours from Columbia, SC. But what could be cooler and more memorable that the DC3 ride and laps around Road America. Maybe we can play card games like in the old news reels....

I gave you Frank Moss's son's name so it might be better to try to contact Frank . I think that they are at Opa Locka and operate a DC-6 and some DC-3's. I'll have to look up the name of their operation, it's something like Historical Flying Foundation.

 

I would be surprised if you could actually "charter" one. However, you might be able to find a private owner who wants to go anyway and cover some of their costs. That's how I would approach this.

If you are flexible on your departure point, I imagine that would help.

 

I haven't mentioned it because we're based out of Yellowknife and it would be cost prohibitive for the OP.

But Buffalo Airways charters passenger 3's all the time. And we've done work in southern Canada too for clients.

Can you do passenger charter point to point in the US? You would need a US 135 or 121 certificate, and even then it would be considered cabotage and illegal unless you had a US registered aircraft.

 

I was under the impression that the FAA and Transport had reciprocal agreements allowing operations in each others airspace for like carriers. We operate our passenger service under 705 "airline operations". I haven't delved into the relevant CARS and FARS enough to know for certain, but I would think that it would be onerus for any major airline to qualify for a second seperate operating certificate when operating over the border. But I'm on the maintenance side more than the operations side...so I could be talking out of my ass

Taking a glance at the FARS one might need to operate under 119 for doing point to point in the states.

 

Foreign air carriers can't transport US citizens point to point in the US. Don't feel bad-- US carriers can't carry Canadians from point to point in Canada either.

There are some nuances related to stopovers and passengers who are "incidental to the purpose of the trip" but in this case not relevant.

I'm not sure how it works in the US, but I do know that US charter operators who operate in Canada have to have a Canadian certificate-- but even that does not give them the right to carry Canadian citizens from point to point in Canada. I assume the same is true for Canadian operators in the US.

Yellowknife!! It took a whole second to think of Ice Pilots then I did a Fchat search and found the thread -that you do indeed work there! How cool is that! Julie and I taped the series and love it, so much so that we have watched each one more than once! The producers did a good job and unfortunately it became way too human with the story about Arnie. He looked like quite a guy....

I called Buffalo, and they said to email, so I will email later this week. Also called Charlotte, NC as they have a DC3 there, but they need an engine and sadly the Executive Director seems to have no interest in getting the plane flying again, and seems to like it as a display. Also, the Griffin GA DC3 is out, and EAA was not that helpful. As for the guy from Griffin, Dan Gryder, he said that they are having an air show in Topeka that many of the big planes are going to at the same time as Oshkosh. I was surprised until he said the reason is that it's hard to get the big planes in and our of Oshkosh. Oh well...

 

You gotta like an operator that still flies C-46s! And the Lockheed Electra (one of my favorites, though I've never flown on one) to boot.

 

I was totally stunned when I looked at the pictures and found the link for Watkins Glen 2007! This was one of my best FCA National meets ever, and of course I recall dinning in the open hanger at the air museum and Steve Matchett as our guest speaker. Driving the Glen, the rally, the concours on Main Street, and the air museum to top it off. It makes me smile to remember that wonderful time. The happiness then, creates a smile today.

The 375+ got my attention, so I looked at your post. As for one of the post you made, I consider myself to be very lucky to have seen the Dusek Collection and the 612 at his "hanger", all due to a pilot friend who was friends with Bob and Rob. He told me he thought he had a Daytona and Stanguellini still, but held back on the good stuff, just to create a huge surprise when I entered the hanger after landing on his private field. True gentleman, gentlepeople indeed.

 

The Dusek's are the most gracious people you will ever meet, they are long time and serious Ferrari collectors.
