Can anyone recommend a few "must have" books covering primarily the postwar to pre-Fiat/Ferrari years of Maserati (i.e. 50s to 90s, roughly speaking), something that gives a good overview of the marque, cars made and it's history in general?

While wandering around in Paris I came over a really neat bookshop, that specialized in automobile (and aircraft) books and literature. "Passion Automobile" in St. Germain des Prés. They had several Maserati books, and it occurred to me that while I have quite a few books on Jaguar, I have not a one on Maserati.

Also of interest would be books outlining Maserati engines and their development, and their racing history.

    Thanks.

Great books about Maserati are from Willem Oosthoek about the Tipo 63, T60/61, 450S and 151.

The book that took me on the path many years ago was Maserati-Road-cars and Maserati from 1926 both by Richard Crump and Rob de la Rive Box.

The 70's books Walter mentions are very important, icons in the childhood of many of us (I hope to identify the Khamsin the nose of which is shown on "Maserati road cars" cover) though as we know they have aged considerably and standards have gone up.

See here for a pretty much complete list:

    http://www.maserati-alfieri.co.uk/alfieri00a.htm

Scroll down on the LEFT all the way down to the LITERATURE section

and go through the MY MASERATI LIBRARY posts. Enrico does a great job covering the topic.

A good overall view is the Tabucchi book which came out a few years ago though there are a few errors.

Vittorie is stunning but it is a work of art more than an information source.

Rarest of all is Severo Boschi's first one.

I have most of them unfortunately they are in storage in Fort Lauderdale for now!

    best regards,

    Marc

PS: the best car bookshops are in the UK, Google:

    Horton's

    Chater's

    Motorbooks

Each has a mind boggling choice.

There is also one in Los Angeles that appears to be quite good though I have never visited that one. there used to be a great one in NYC when I was there for a while but that eas in 1990 and it is long gone.

The one you visited rue de Lille is the best in France, you were lucky to find it by chance, a needle in a haystack!

Fully agree with all of Marc and Walters recommendations, especially the Oosthoek titles - worth every penny/cent.
That said I would always start a collection with "Maserati: The Postwar Sportsracing Cars" by Joel Finn (out of print, try eBay). Top of my list, but that's just because of a racing car bias I guess.
I suspect modesty prevented him saying so but I think Walters 300S book is another "must have" - the best collection of photographs in any Maserati book frankly. I am sure Marc's forthcoming title covering the Citroen years will also be essential reading for a more recent take on the whole Khamsin, Bora, Merak etc era.
Finally, because for me it has everything - a great car, great drivers, historical context and so on - I love DSJ's "Maserati 3011 The Story Of A Racing Car".
    Happy reading.

I agree most with Marc`s comments.
The Tabucchi book is not a good read as its very much on the surface in seperating the various types of cars made by Maserati. A major mistake with this book, IMO.
Another great book is "Maserati Catalogue Raisonné" - also out of print since many years. A good read and - it make your library look BIG .:)

But why does Marc refer to book shops he never visited (in LA) and without mentioning its name - or to this also unnamed one in NYC in 1990????

    Hi Walter, Mairesse, all:

The one in L.A. I could not remember the name of but have now found it:

    http://www.autobooks-aerobooks.com/

The one in New York which was just off Park Avenue, I was just mentioning it with nostalgia because it was a great one and it is sad that the US has comparativley few car book stores. There seems to be more interest in automotive history -as opposed to working on the cars- on the old side of the pond...

Another great one is Shopping Formula 1 in Maranello, right across from a certain factory...

I would definitely include your 300S book in the list and Mairesse thanks, I hope mine is worthy...speaking of which...I need to get back to chapter PDF verification right now:).

    best regards,

    Marc

I have only Martin Buckley's book and must admit that I was deeply disappointed with it. Looked as something not to miss – my favorite classic car journalist writing about my favorite car brand. But it simply isn't interesting enough, lacking good facts or even, why not, gossips. And he even managed to completely miss at least one production model, Barchetta from early 90s, I think it isn't mentioned at all in the book!

I am not sure if this has been listed; but there is a new book by some guy called Marc Sonnery, apparently being published by Doug at Eau Rouge Publishing in the UK.
Not read it yet, but at least one or two people on here seem enthusiastic about it.
    Just mentioning!

    hahah! Thanks Paul.

To be clear no one has read it yet, apart of Doug, me and the PDF artists, it is being printed this week and next. I get to see my book for the first time at the printer's in the UK this coming Friday and it will be launched at Retromobile. I will do a signing at Horton's and Gilena the Brescia shop will also have it at the show. Most orders will be online via:

    http://www.eaurougepublishing.com/site/maserati-the-citroen-years

I will be signing copies in the UK and at Retro. I will be at the show the 6th to the 8th all day, I look forward to seeing many of you there and also discovering Walter's new one.

    best regards,

    Marc

I've heard that particular book is about some strange, idiosyncratic cars prized only by very oddball collectors. ;)

Luca Dal Monte is Direttore Stampa e Relazioni Esterne presso Maserati, he has authored numerous books on Ferrari. (The Ferrari Phenomenon, Il tedesco volante e la leggenda Ferrari).

    He is very good.
