We only received about 600mm.'wittle bit of wind.SE did a great deal worse.
Once these things go out to sea and re-form anything can and will happen.

We usually get about 1 1/2 yards of rain per year.

This is nothing out of the ordinary really, just people are bigger sooks now and want to be kissed on the arse and patted on the head.

I paid an additional $3000 tax for the wankers that didn't have any insurance for last year's floods

Whatever happened to the days when we were a lot tougher ??

My airline pilot mate just sent me the forecast for Brisbane and Gold Coast airports - he's about to head there from Sydney.
Glad it's him and not me! I haven't seen a forecast that bad for a long time.

Meanwhile in Adelaide: sunny, 27, and perfect. And we just beat the Vics in the Sheffield Shield. A great day!
I'm starting to wonder why we booked a few days in Port Douglas starting on Friday...

I remember returning from Sydney a few years back landing at OOL and the 737 took 3 attempts to land the thing due to heavy crosswinds .... I loved it watching the AFCS working overtime trying to keep the plane level but others were panicking :)

I imagine the final successful landing attempt would have been a pretty "firm" arrival as well.

My mate is flying an Airbus up from Sydney (probably half way there by now). His forecast shows visibility in Brisbane as low as 500m with severe undershoot wind-shear, very heavy rain, gusts to 40kt etc.

I did the right thing and sent back a pic of me with scotch in hand sitting in the backyard in the sun, cricket on in the background...

    :)

    "I love a sunburnt country,
    A land of sweeping plains,
    Of ragged mountain ranges,
    Of droughts and flooding rains.
    I love her far horizons,
    I love her jewel-sea,
    Her beauty and her terror
The wide brown land for me!"

    Dorothy Mackeller

Couldn't agree more, this is the country we live in.

Me too and some, it was a flat 1%. Pisses me off. The same with the fires down here, people seem to have enough money to buy their beer smokes etc but don't pay insurance then expect us to pay for their houses to be rebuilt.

Wasn't part of the problem that the QLD government was the only one to refuse to sign up to some sort of disaster protection insurance or something?

And now the rest of us have to pay for their stupidity.
    ****ing joke.

With all the on-board computers, ILS , etc surely it can't be that hard to land these things ?

    You sure about that?

    Senator Nick Xenophon:

"the states of Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria, and even New South Wales have all got various forms of Natural Disaster insurance. Queensland doesn't, the Territories don't, neither does Tasmania. There ought to be a system in place where states have a huge dis-incentive if they don't take out Natural Disaster Insurance so that states are obliged to act prudentially and reasonably in taking out this insurance. Now is the time to fix this up so that Australian taxpayers aren't left with a future bill for any other natural disasters."

    And

"back in 2000 the Queensland Government was offered insurance, could have taken out natural disaster insurance which would have included roads for in the order of $50-million, and that would have been multi-billion dollar insurance. Now, if the Queensland Government acted prudentially, acted reasonably at that time, we wouldn't be talkling about a flood levy or budget cutbacks"

I don't mind the rain, but the wind really scares the crap out of me.

I hope all you guys are OK up there, looks pretty bad from what I've seen on the news tonight.

Haha! Most (all) airliners have auto-land capability, but that depends on ground based equipment to be able to be used legally, and I think in Oz only Melbourne and Perth have the required infrastructure for that. (Don't quote me on that I may be wrong).

Regardless, all the computers in the world can't overcome the laws of physics.
Every aircraft has a maximum crosswind component, above which the controls simply lack the authority to overcome the forces. A simpler solution is for the airport to have a cross-runway, which the Gold Coast doesn't have.

This is nothing compared too 2011.

Sure there's localised flooding but this is what happens in QLD in January/Feb.

Even the lowly F111s had "generated" ILS and landing computers, all the knuckleheads had to do was control the throttle, I've seen them come down with HUGE yaw which, while possible for some of the better pilots to control , is better handled by the computers :)

There is big difference between what is "possible" and what is "legal".

Even my little PC12NG is capable of landing in 0/0 conditions, but I imagine I'd be joining the dole queue the next day if I tried a stunt like that.

I guess things are different in the military where "legal" may not be as much of a consideration.
