+1000! Who is anyone to tell other people what their dreams should be?

It's clear to me that the people that save up for so many years have more passion for the marque than I do. And that says a lot. I applaud them for it, because they must get vilified for chasing their dream very often and still they stick with it.

And if they have to give up their dream for whatever reason, at least they have not squandered their money like the far majority of the grey masses.

    And he should have added:

"I died way too young, a shadow of my former self, without the capability for coherent thought except for the nagging feeling that there might be more to life than shallow things. I had fun but I failed to be a decent man.".

Stealing from a woman's purse to fund your drinking habit, after you've been a multi-millionaire. Drunk driving offences. Drunk television appearance in Terry Wogan. Dying of liver failure. What a hero.

    Anyway, back to regular programming.

So what is it like to be so rich that you can just go out and buy anything you want at any time? And since you are so wealthy, why do you continue to own a car you can't stand to drive?

Owning a car you ***** about constantly....THAT is nuts

In my case, depending on what I get (eventually), I'll still have to finance a sizeable (up to 50%) portion just to have manageable payments. In my case, I only put "extra" money into the car fund. Revenue from overtime, bonuses, 2nd job, 3rd job (when I can). Usually adds up to around $15k per year.

    Slow process for sure.....

It's not that I can afford to buy ANYTHING I want, it's that anything I buy I choose to pay cash for

    Including my house.

We all find joy in different ways. In my view, our lives have been degraded by a lack of patience and need for "instant gratification". Postponing gratification has its own rewards, never understood by those unwilling or unable to discipline themselves. Best

Second that, if you can't buy sth with cash, you cant afford it, move on there are cheaper equally gratifying pleasures. If you can buy with cash, but choose credit, it's another story.
Saving for years to buy a ferrari and sacrificing basic needs is insane.

    Hey guys,

I have a friend who makes approx $50k/month from his restaurant business (yes per month). He has no debt and has a bunch ($3 million) invested in real estate. He supports only his wife and one kid. He likes cars and getting a ferrari is on his to do list but he is having troubling reconciling with spending that much on a car. He doesn't want to buy used either.

Ok, he has two bad habits namely drinking and womanizing and spends quite a bit on that, probably $5k/month.

He worries that his business income may decline in the future, so isn't committing to a ferrari purchase though he wants one.

Is he being too conservative? Just curious as to your reactions.

See, I just don't understand people like this. Why do you care if someone wants to realise their dream and they make sacrifices for that? Why does everyone need to do what YOU would do? Let people make their own choices. Diversity is the spice of life. And BTW - nobody said anything about sacrificing basic needs, they just choose not to do certain things, which is their choice and their right. I would not save up for years to buy a Ferrari, but that doesn't mean that it is insane.

@458dreamer: Is your friend too conservative? I don't know, is it conservative to spend $5k/month on women when you have a wife and kid? Doesn't seem very conservative, nor very cost conscious, to me. What is certain, is that there are very few Ferraris that will cost you $5k a month. Quite a few, probably most, can be owned for $5k a year, including depreciation. And if business goes slower, you can sell the Ferrari whereas the $60k he has spent on women and booze is down the drain. So from a purely financial standpoint, I would say that choosing a Ferrari is more conservative than what he is doing right now.

People need to spend more time figuring out how to make more $$ efficiently vs clipping every coupon, walking around in track pants, eating at $5 all you can eats.

If you need years of savings for a car you can't afford it period. Should not be more then a few % of your net worth if you REALLY want to enjoy it and not be overly worried everytime you turn it on.

Perhaps my question was not specific enough, but when I asked about conservative, I meant financially conservative only, not with respect to values, which I agree his behavior would not qualify him for.

He wouldn't chose a ferrari over women and booze, those take first priority, the cars get second priority. So if he buys a new 458, say for around $280k, how would that only cost $5k a year? Or even $10k a year?

I call it the way I see it.

Count the word "dream" in this forum, dream-dream-dream-dream
if you can't afford it, its' a nightmare, how is it different than people buying houses with no money down and the likes.

It's pretty simple, it's not a dream, it's a very nice fancy car, either you can afford it, or you can't.

    Yes, exactly!

There are a lot of things in life that make no sense when examined rationally.

For example, I have a plastic tophy. I can see it from where I'm sitting now. It cost me about $50,000. and all of my spare time from age 27 through 32. Plus, partial use of one of my fingers, and other physical reminders of my 12 crashes. Totally worth it!
