The reason i ask this question is that i just got a 348 and still have not driven it yet ! The more posts i read the more i am understanding that a Ford mustand 5.0lx of the same era is faster. Seems like this car is a bore speed wise to many, the 348 i bought seemed very quick from the passenger side :)

Does someone know the exact numbers? Mulitiple sites have different data. i read 5.6 14.3 quatermile. Thats impossible on the quarter mile it seems . I had a 996 c2 and a 996 tt, i had the rare occassion to race with a 348 tb with my 996 c2, the porsche had 4.9 and 13.1 quarter-mile but that 348 was still in front of me at any speed. The 348 was singing and very hard to catch over 80km, and a 996 is not that much different than a newer 997 s version, tested this many many times. Turbo different.

I know this is irrelevant as the cars are 15 years apart but it gives me a comparison. I had porsches for 8 years and just did this 348 switch.

I know it is not meant to drag race etc ..but can anyone tell me how fast these cars really are ?

    348 TB
capristo exhaust no cats ...i guess it sheds weight
i am on a diet as well.
And if it makes a difference in weight i removed the car manual from the glove compartment.

How quick can this car be ?

Quick enough to get you into trouble :D

On an airfield track, it's the same speed/time as a Lotus Elise S2 (Toyota engine).

Think I've seen the vid, Sy. Was a pretty twisty circuit too if I recall, where you'd expect the Lotus to do pretty well. This yours isn't it?

no twists, just straight line acceleration..rolling start etc..

twists have variables, i like the way you drove that 348 on the track. i cant to do that yet :)

    just regular acceleration.

how many car lengths is a 355 faster in the quarter mile ?

According to period tests, the 355 is about a second faster in the 1/4 which is about 10 car lengths. If you put the same rubber on both cars, it probably compresses a bit to 8 tenths (and the same in car lengths).

    Yer that's mine.

The race instructor drove my 348 and my friends Elise and got an identical time. He drives Elise's all the time, but it was the first time he drove a 348.

It was also the first time I drove the Elise and I was faster in that than in the 348.

Therein lies the problem with the 348. Whilst you can get into other cars and drive them fast straight away, in the 348 you need more skill to get the most out of it.

I was holding the camera, a race car driver was driving the 348 :D

I imagine that would make it more satisfying to drive fast. :)

    All the best,

Yes you are correct. Mine was just a guess but when working the actual numbers the 355 is slightly more than 11 car lengths faster in the quarter....thats huge!

Really not the right car (any older Ferrari, really) if you're looking for straight line grunt. Plus, the financial woes associated with doing burnouts in these cars can be too terrible to contemplate. :)

These numbers seem all over the board(s) ... depending the sources. BUT, according to 0 to 60 times:

    90 F 348 0-60: 5.9 1/4m 14.1
    93 SS 0-60: 5.5 1/4m 13.8
    93 spider 0-60: 5.5 1/4m 13.9

    05 Elise s 0-60: 4.6 1/4m 13
    08 SC 0-60 : 4.4 1/4m 13.3

(Elise came to USA in 05 w/ 2zz powerplant)

Still love that video! I remember six years ago the night I bought my 348. I must have watched that video about fifty times in between purchase and delivery. I appreciate it more now for the first few rev matches upon downshifting.

Errico, I think 1/4 mile times are entirely pointless to a certain degree. A mate of mine has a Scooby that he's modded, used to own a garage that did performance modding. It's got a custom turbo system, methanol injection system and full launch control including flat shifting. For the 1/4 the guy dials up the boost, pushes a button then floors it. Still it'll be more than 20 car lengths ahead of a 355 at the line, well more than double what Gerry describes as the huge difference between a 348 and 355. Another mate has a GTR that's just shy of 800 bhp, his dad runs an indie and used to be an F1 race mechanic. Not sure of it's time but he does 'compete' in it. If you want 1/4 mile times neither a 348 or 355 are astonishing, it's not what they're for. But I'd take either Ferrari over a Scooby or GTR any day of the week.

Thank you guys, i know its pointless as i will probably never launch it from a light myself. In eight years with the 911s never once did i launch my car from a stop. I was just curious to know how quick all around these cars can go, its one thing to not catch a turbo 911 but not a ford mustang 1993 ! which i owned till last year as a collector car. 14.2 quarter mile. it ran 13.4 with exhaust and gears.

the 348 looks right, low , sharp looking, and its different. I love the 355, always did and although i could have choosen either i decided on the 348 for the air vents on the side and the apprent lower cost to maintain.

i friend of mine has a 360 which looks right from every angle but for some reason it doesnt look like this, and this is hard to top.

for the record i had a 996 c2 and i was racing a 348 from 1 2 3 4 gears and that 348 never once gave up and slowed, not sure if all the specs are true but the car can do better than 14.6 quarter mile , the 911 was 12.9-13.1 and not once did i pull away from the 348. So this is the reason i started this post. I can not believe the numbers :)

These types of cars you are comparing the 348 to are much easier to drive. The 348 is a very quick car once you work out how to drive it properly. Once you have enough experience in it and you know exactly where to keep the RPM while changing gears and going through the corners it is much faster then cars with the same power output. The 348 has a good power curve and once you stay in the zone, its an exciting car to drive

If you want pure speed, but a crotch rocket. A 348 is faster than 90% of us can drive realistically. 0-60 is one thing, but not many cars can jump from 80 to 165 MPH... with the top down... and look this good. See the bigger picture here?
