I decided to change the fuzzy seals around the window frame. If I close the driver's door with the window part way up the window rattles quite a bit. When full up or down it does not make a noise as it is trapped by seal at top or bottom. I just ordered the pieces from Mr. Fiat; I have bought rubber seals from him before. I am sure with some hunting I could find a "generic" match from a US car since there is nothing special about the piece. That is not the reason for the post.

Does anyone know how to change the fuzzy strips? I assume I take the door panel out since the strips go below the panel most or all the way to the bottom of the window frame. The real trick will be to change them without removing the window! Possible? I am hoping if I pull the old strips out I will be able to feed the vertical runs down the track with the window fully lowered. The top will be easy I am sure.

Any experience doing this? All help welcome as always.

This is something I want to do to my car also. Looking forward to learning how.

Did the Boxer's years ago - the 400 should be similar, and this is by no means any "official' way to do it:

    Window up
    Remove door panel for access
I did this part one end (front or rear of the window) at a time:
Grab/pry/gouge the bottom-most part of the insert, pull it free of its adhesive as far up as you can (I also used a narrow putty knife and a flat-blade screwdriver), clean out the old glue/crud (follow with paint thinner on a folded paper towel), but put the insert back in the channel for now.
    Lower window
Repeat the grab/pry/gouge part again, from the top, as far as you can downward, break the rest of the channel loose (used that screwdriver again), verify that it (the insert) can slide up/down.
Cut with dykes/razor at the top edge of the glass, remove that top piece., and clean the channel of glue/crud.
Slip the bottom of the new insert into the channel
Raise window about 2/3 to clear most of the remaining insert at the bottom, and feed more insert in from the top (the reason for keeping that top 1/3 open).
Pull through to the bottom of the channel, feed some more through the top to account for stretch, cut the top just a little long, raise window as far as it will go.
Pull the insert out of the channel enough to brush some contact cement into the channel (keep clear of the glass groove in the insert!!), push the insert fully into the channel, and clean the edges of any excess glue. I waited a while for the glue to set.
Lower window, cut the insert to fit exactly how the old did (hope you took a good look), and basically, repeat what you did down below.
Top edge should be a cinch, but same principle (Boxer was just an extension of the front edge piece, IIRC)

It was a tedious, nerve-racking PIA the first time, but by the passenger door, no biggie (but still tedious).

You can probably do this on both front and back of a window at the same time, but I didn't want that pulley system to get the chance to get out of whack.

Thanks. When removing the door panel I'm having trouble getting the black door lock knob off. I assume it just unscrews but mine won't budge. I just want to make sure it unscrews before I really put the pressure to it to break it free.

Also, how difficult is it to take the cables off of the pulleys? I really need to take every thing apart and clean and lube everything including the motor assembly.

Thanks for "procedure" and advice. I wonder if the contact cement is really needed. I would think the strips go in pretty snug. It would make it easier on the next guy!

Just checked on the Boxer's progress, and there was a little less channel (at the bottom) on the back of the windows in the fully stripped door than I remember, and didn't think to ask Ryan if he had removed a part there........Front was certainly still the same, and haven't been into a 400 door myself yet, but the procedure for the Boxer front channel still carries.

I specifically did NOT want to take apart the pulley system - You're braver than I!! I'd be tempted to just clean/lube it in place.

I'd use some kind of adhesive, because when the glass isn't holding it in place (bottom when the glass is up, and vice versa), I wouldn't want it to try to curl out of the channel in any way. The cable system makes me nervous enough without adding the strain of overcoming out-of-place rubber. The "next guy" should have to worry about this for many years......(crossing fingers not to be my own "next guy" sooner than expected).
Probably helped that it was cold when I did it, so it may have helped the old glue crack off....or it was just old and dried out.

It's available several places, just make sure it's the right stuff - not too shallow/deep, or to wide/narrow.

    WUT WUT WUT????? :D
    Danged furrinurz..........

I did the job and had none of the hassle mentioned about cleaning out the glue. Mine were never glued in place so they came out really easily. They had never shifted position, so the news ones are in just like the old ones--no glue. Job went really quick; wife only had to assist with the final strip to pull window forward while pulling thru the rear strip.
