I am in the middle of servicing the Dino and having found that the valve clearances are pretty much where I left them 18 months ago - I rebuilt the engine 3K miles prior to that and have covered 3.5K miles since.
So my question is simply; when should I next be thinking of doing this awful job!
Will it be ok to leave it for a couple of years and do the full 5-6K miles without looking inside? Now things seem settled in what is the accepted routine? Any comments greatly appreciated

The most crucial part about the dino as far as i am concerned is the valve shims. Most other items are routine but they can wear out the cams in such a short period if you get it wrong or they close up to much when hot.

Unfortunately that is the engines weakness. I would say they are good for 3000miles max then flip them over regardless, then buy new ones. They are so cheap its not worth the risk.

    Tony,
Just so I understand; are you literally saying take the shims out and put them back in upside down?

First you must start from a base point, ie you know they are all brand new.

When you come to the first service interval, flip them over as you know they havent been used thats if all the gaps are good.

Next service, renew them as both sides are worn out.

If you need to re-shim any then obviously replace but keep a record of what ones you have changed so you can use both sides.

I use the sheet below to record it makes it easy, hope this helps

Only if they havent been used i hope:))

another tip is when you replace them, put the shim in with the stamped number on the valve bucket. ie facing down. That way when you remove it next time you can see the size and you also know it hasnt been used. Sometimes its difficult to distinquish old from new as the hardened face is only microns thick.
