Hi all, I lurk around this thread every now and then as I find it quite entertaining at times.. recently I have lurked around more as I will be transferring from HK to SG within my professional firm in few months time (probably May/June).

Any good tips or advice as to how to blend into the SG culture?

One sad note is I am going to lose my GTR :(
No way I would be able to afford anything in SG for a long long while....

    Thanks in advance!

Welcome to Singapore. I have a few friends from HK and some of them have become Singapore citizens. While a few complain Singapore is a bit slow in comparison to HK, they get use to it and some like it. For one they like the bigger apartments in Spore. With your HK cantonese accent,it's not difficult for locals to tell where you are from. However, if you want to blend in use the word lah when you speak. Example no lah, that is Singlish. While new cars are crazy price now, you can try used cars. go to sgmart.com.sg to find some used GTRs. Good luck.

Hey, welcome to Sillypore where we pay 90k for 10 years for a piece of paper, but I guess you allready know that.. Lol

On a serious note , you might want to consider bringing in your GTR or buy a used car here, of course it's a bit more than what you pay in HK.

Maybe get a an Evo if you are an Andrenalin junkie or another GTR .

I dare say Spore has better food than HK and the people are friendlier and easier to get along :)

    Thanks King!

I do appreciate the bigger apartments and the impressive urban planning. I also find Singaporean people having better manners and courtesy in general compared to HK locals, although my gf (Singaporean) gives me the wtf look whenever I say that!

depends on how old it is jas ... i think imports of cars older than 3 years is not allowed ... unless it's a vintage ...

    jon, is this correct ?

I figured price of cars in Spore is pretty much double of whatever in HK.. I never thought about importing and wonder how difficult it is! It could be a better option over a quick sale and taking a big hit on the price.

Honestly, food is a close call and I can't really say which I like better. I enjoy the hawker centres a lot in Spore, but I also love the Cantonese (ghetto ones), Hotpot (aka steamboat) and Chiu Chow restaurants in HK!

    Yes Bro,
It has to be less than 3 years old that's what I was told too.

ONE.MOTORING - Home has all the information regarding rules and import duties

Lol, my argument for food is you have a variety here :) but I do like HK for the exotic cars and weather :) our weather sucks :(.. It's bloody humid all the time !!!

If your GTR is less than 3 years old, you can import it to Singapore. You would have to pay custom duties, OMV and COE.

You can also check out Singapore No.1 Car Site for New Car & Used Cars - sgCarMart for GTR pricing :)

    Hope this helps :)

Welcome Apegen. There's more variety in food over here :)

Depends on how long you're going to be in Singapore, it's troublesome to self-import IMHO & not worth it for couple of years. Just buy a local used or rent. Anyway, the public transport here is pretty decent & relatively cheaper than HK.

Better bring along someone who has experience dealing with resale cars! You sure do not want to experience things falling apart one week after driving it!

    Welcome aboard the "fine" city.
Littering, spitting amidst a very comprehensive list is against the law.
Singaporeans are generally soft spoken and do not shout across the street.
Remember to check out our night safari! And not forgetting the casinos!

    As for chinese food,
I recommend Sin Hoi San at Tiong Bahru.
They have a famous fish delicacy which is ,that hey are the sole importer in singapore!
Restaurant rise you might wanna try Yü cuisine at MBS! Tasty oysters!
For buffet Pariss at Marina Square is a bang for its buck!

Hope you enjoy your stay here Apegen!

Thanks for the warm welcome guys!
You guys seem like an awesome and friendly bunch! Are there any regular fchat gatherings/drives?

    Thanks D!

Given the car prices are so crazy, I still see loads of nice cars around Orchard everytime I visit! I saw a yellow A-VENT-AND-A-DOOR couple of times during my last stay - someone from here maybe??

I have been roaming around the sgcarmart site a bit already.. the prices still amuse me.. I probably need to settle in first then maybe I will get numb with the prices!

Thanks Jon! Thats the plan for now.. settle in first and explore my options! I set my target at 2-3 years in Spore for now. I wanted to get some SEA exposure as opposed to only China, career-wise. We will see what happens!

    Lovely collection you have btw!

Thanks for the recommendations, Simon! Will note them down for sure!

drives/meetups get organized at the drop of a hat ...

    :)

for an island this small, with the kind of pricing for cars that exists, there is an unusually high number of exotics here ...
