FIA says new LMP1 rules will bring privateers back to sportscars - Le Mans news - AUTOSPORT.com

I think this is great news, and I really hope it encourages more privateers to get into the WEC. I think the WEC is a lot better to watch these days than F1, and the more of these sorts of initiatives, the better, even if the ACO/FIA have a long way to go.

Jim Glickenhaus has been talking about these new rules for a while. Let's hope there are more enterprising personalities like him out there.

(I'm also sort of hoping Porsche will sell customer versions of whatever car they are preparing for 2014)...

it's the old sports car life cycle once again...big $$ from manufacters comes in and pushes out the privateers, then the grid shrinks, then the MFRs go away and poof, empty grid...then the privateers come back in, make is exciting, the MFRs want back in and off we go again. it's roughly a 10-15 year life cycle that can be traced back for a long time.

+1 Ain't that the truth. The privateers build it so the manufacturers can wreck it. Same old song.

Exhibit B: IndyCar. Manufacturers like Honda and Toyota wielded too much clout, squeezed out the privateers. Now look at the ashes.

Indycar's demise is much, much deeper than that.

a better example would be F1, where teams like Tyrell, Jordan, Ligier, etc got forced out by not having MFR support, then the manufacturers (BMW, Toyota, Honda) pulled the plug when the economy tanked.

Indeed. Stupid rules that were demanded by Manufacturers to enhance their positions within marketplaces. Now you have "spec racing" all because no one has a check book that big. Except for......"Uncle Bernie"! :D

The ACO has to stop the technology race in LMP1 and go back to basics.
If not, only one or two factories will run in this category.

The spectators want a show at races, not a pair of laboratory cars at the front and no one able to catch.

For that, privaters have to be made welcome, and rules taylored for affordable cars to be raced by teams. At the moment, LMP1 cars are not available to privaters, because they are too expensive and too complex.

LMP1 privateers will also have a separate Privateers Cup title, so the success of the FIA/ACO gambit will depend as much on how well they publicise that battle as on whether the rules allow privateers to fight for overall wins. Having been at Le Mans last year, I can tell you that Rebellion's fourth place was a genuinely big deal to the fans and media.
