    Russian Bombers Intercepted Over U.S. Territory of Guam

    Anyone else see this? It once was news when this happened, especialy if it where to occur on such an important date.

    The Air Force has confirmed that on the night of Obama's State of the Union address (SOTU), U.S. fighter jets had to be scrambled and sent up in response to two Russian bombers circling the U.S. territory of Guam.

    Is this just so common it's no big deal? Do we-on our side do this all the time? And what's up with a prop driven bomber? It looks so ...foreign.

    It was discussed a bit in the P&R section.

    The Tu-95 is an interesting plane, very noisy and surprisingly skinny. Only time I have seen one was in Cairo a few years back. I was surprised to read that those in current service with the Russians were made in the 80s/90s.

    Newer than the B-52, almost as fast.

    Smaller payload, although that doesn's matter as much w/ nuclear weapons.

    Incredible airplane and from what I have read, the result of many German engineers, especially the incredible engine and gear box combination that proved to be very reliable.

    Mostly used for maritime patrol now. Happens all the time. Did I see something about them being nuclear armed while flying maritime patrol near Guam? How funny.

    But the fuselage is derived from the B-29s that landed in the USSR during WW II, and has the same diameter!

    Russians had 3 B-29's. They used them to build the TU-4. An almost direct copy. Looked identical.

    They built over 800 TU-4's.

    The TU-95 is just longer, with different wings and tail... and engines.


    Good story:

    One May Day celebration around the end of WWII, (there were US reps there) 3 B-29's flew over, (we knew that they had them), so we knew that they were using them...

    then... a a 4th B-29 flew over... uh oh... we knew they had copied them.
