Sounds communism to me. They should run a reality check with the citizens, are the masses complaining that they cannot live in Orchard, Bt Timah, HV or so? It's childish thoughts that the masses are jealous about the wealthy. Our demographics has a thick middle class unlike other Asean countries & most of us own more than one property.

We are complaining about our livelihood, our expenses, basic necessities, public transport, affordable medical, education & general housing affordability.

HDBs which 80% are staying are our core housing. The prices and value should not be colluded with private estates. There is little difference between private and public now, it should be a controlled item that benefits citizens, a privilege. Anyway, it'll take many words to speak on properties alone.

Traffic, our town planning is far better than Bangkok & we have the opportunity by simply doing reclamations. A privilege few countries have. Also, we have to look at the population density psf between here & other metropolis. There was once an expert who mentioned that car parking is too cheap in Sgp compared to HK etc. so perhaps that is a better way to control vehicle population in a land squeezed island. But look at how efficient is their MTR? Our ERP also doesn't seem to work as well or does it? I don't have the figures but COE can be better defined instead of mixing everything now like Rojak. Now, we have a 2.0 saloon buyer bidding for a chance to own a new car with a tycoon for his RR. Surely the price will go up but who benefits?

If they want to slap on luxury tax then go ahead but please remove the COE. Want to increase population to 6million but reduce vehicle ownerships, illogical isn't it?

So, for political standing, they take drastic measures to appease some noises? then they'll be very busy making changes every quarterly but remember the long term effects of these that may cripple the country just like birth control & the extinction of dialects, an identity+culture lost forever.

Yeah, I guess the wait and see approach is the Best.

The 458 and the 599 are the best modern Design for ferrari's IMHO.

I dont know mate.... from the amt they collect p.a im thinking more could and should be done to help the masses...
Raising the standard of living shouldnt even be a solution in the first place. Yes we do want to be a first world country with first world standards, but damn, if you look at other countries, their fast food work workers earn on avg a 10$ an hr... twice of what our friendly mcdonalds staffs earn... their goods are also not sold at jacked up prices if u go and do some research... a handy lip balm is sold at 200% of cost price in Sillypore in watsons.

First and foremost the Govt needs to raise the minimal wages of locals and put a limit on importing FTs.
We are not proactive in the bedroom because we want to earn more money out there.
When we have more money, we spend more freely boosting the economy, and when the economy is good, we wont hesitate to have more babies.
Its a vicious cycle when our pay is not levelled with the living standards.
The other countries like swiss have high levels of living standards too but their pay is in alignment to that.

Plus the GsT bonus given out by the government wont be able to sustain the avg joe at all...having said that, the baby bonus is a joke.... a few miserable k cant even last a year to bring up a baby...

Dude, many HDB dwellers are millionaires now, at least on paper. It's capitalism, our government don't owe it to us BUT the males are robbed of the 2.5yrs golden period for SAF defending a country which we're now finding a little alien. So perhaps they should provide natural born citizens and NSmen privileges. The baby bonus package is an insult, I didn't even take it. They should award us $100k per baby as a fund to see the child through till SAF. Money can come from COE ;) I think gynae will be a popular job :D

About salary, locals are a pampered lot now. They demand benefits, short hours, 5 days week etc so a lot of service sectors are shunned and who do we find to replace? I just met a couple of PRC men working as plumbers here in new HDBs & they're paid $150 per day, not bad. That's RMB20k a month, better than fresh grads here? definitely better than poly grads but will a local polygrad be a plumber? I don't think so. Not sexy to show your name card to prospective in laws I suppose ^^

I don't know about admin jobs but there should be an in depth study on the cause & effect plus what are the locals expectations now & what is available for them instead of blanket rules that kill businesses now. Very soon, you'll see malls emptying which means reduction in rental yield, lesser advertisements, lesser jobs, lesser spending power....

I still remember that in the 80s we went shopping for new HDB flats & there were so many estates for us to choose. Those days should be BFU "built for u" prices were just $60k for a 4 room flat while maisonettes were about $100k new. Decent entry salary was about $800-1k.

How much were our ministers paid back then? :p

Well argued and valid points I must add.

I ain't a fan boy for the men in white but I would never support WP.

Kenneth ! The late jPJ son is a good contender but I guess , I would never have a chance to vote cause I am under Tanjong Pagar GRC.

All good points. I have a headache now.

Any case solidifies my view that for car ownership, I will focus on oz. it's selective taxation, fair enough. And I don't have pockets deep enough to own exotics moving forward. Just enough to renew the Coe on my Lambo maybe in 7 or 8 years time.

I get what you are saying. And I agree that these new tax measures do not solve the fundamental problems. But you will agree that the government is taking steps to preserve itself.

In terms of the real solutions, they have now taken the necessary, if belated, action to improve and expand on the infrastructure. Hundreds of thousands of new flats will be built. The total track length of the MRT system will be doubled. Meantime, improvements in the signalling systems by 2015-2016 will mean that capacity on existing lines can be increased by 20-30%. Hundreds of buses will be added. Problem is, some of these solutions will take a long time to implement and the effects will not be felt in time for the next election. So, meantime, populist measures will be introduced in order to try to appease the anger of the masses.

It's quite clear that the government has made some fundamental errors and we are now paying the price for them. The trouble is - the alternative does not look any better. WP's policies of acceptance of slower growth in exchange for massive reduction in immigration/foreign workforce and enhanced social protection for the masses means only one thing - decreased revenues and higher spending for the government. Where are they going to get the increased revenues from? Without alienating their constituents? Most likely from the wealthy. Increased income tax, capital gains tax, inheritance tax, and other forms of wealth taxes. It is essentially the Republican/Democrat and Conservative/Labour divide. I hope I'm wrong but it does seem that Singapore is heading in that direction ...

    Choice is something we need!

I don't agree on a few points that you have brought up here, but I shall not try and put my arguement via an iPhone.

I believe Sporeans in general are Jaded and even me.. I have to admit.

I pray that we have more parties and not only WP and Pap. Have you seen the young men in white! I would never vote for the young Pap ministers and I would put this on ink.

I respect our current PM , Thaman, and his "old" team! But transport minister and the others ... I reserve my comments

The bulk of their fortune lies in the hdb flat i presume... lol..
Well.. that said, there are always two faces to a coin.
On the employees side, when you pay peanuts, you get monkeys. Why would i wanna work for 7 days a week for $7/hr when i can get a more comfortable admin job 5 days a week with higher pay? I can use the comp to shop online and snack and maybe doze off for a bit too...

And then on the employers side theyre like why wld i wanna pay you $10 an hr when i can employ 2 monkeys for $5/hr who can do the job equally well, if not better?

For the time put in the pay must be justified...
but then again its a no brainer job..people will come in and ask for a lower pay to undercut the locals.

Blue collar job or white collar job, if it pays well locals are willing to get their hands dirty imo... but business owners are not willing to pay higher wages because FTs asks for less and work harder..the economy is so drastic now theres no room to haggle. I would be proud if a said set of skills yield me a salary more than that of a graduate..

Money makes magic you see... those shunned jobs will magically turn popular with the right salary given..
