Ok guys, hope I can get some ideas on this one.

I have sprung a leak in the hose that comes off the bottom of the oil tank, it is the large braided line (1 1/4") that goes from the bottom of the engine to the oil tank.

It appears that the crimp ferrule was not crimped tight enough so after some time and heat the joint has loosened and you can rotate the fitting on the engine side - the tank side is tight.

The hose is listed at $1300!!!

I am considering a couple of ideas:

    1) cut off the existing ferrule and replace it with an oetiker type clamp or two even, possibly cut the hose off a little - there is a little slack there. Then reinstall the fresh end on the hose (maybe with a sealant) - this line looks to be suction, not pressure so I am not too concerned with it blowing off - even if it were pressure, oil is maybe 80-90 PSI max and an oetiker clamp can easily hold that.

    2) Since there is no way in hell I am paying $1300 for a hose - I figure I could replace the hose with a -20 braided line and the required -20 A/N hose ends for about $100, worse case scenario, a little welding and/or machining custom fittings to match the oil tank and engine sump - still this would only be a few hundred at the most.

Any thoughts? Anyone else have this hose leak?

Take it to a hydraulic hose specialist and they'll repair it for you - dont jnow how much it is in US but in UK its under £100 - I need to get this done as mine has a crack in but I know of a few other folk who've had it done

The only issue that may arise here is the difficulty in finding metric hose (which it looks like it is) this is why I thought of switching it to easily found A/N hose.

Let me check with my mechanic. He fixed the same problem for less than $200.

I see you are using the oil sump ground wire like the rest of us...mine is home made..

Find a local shop. The price of a new one is nutz.

The only tough part is the aluminum/plastic washers on the end fittings, which we do carry in stock at Ricambi America.

Is this hose part of the SRI upgraded kit? If so, perhaps it's a good time to upgrade all of them by buying the entire kit.

No, The OP is referring to the steel braided oil hose from the tank to the engine.

No it is not. The SRI hose kits are for gas, and coolant, not oil.
I am in the bay area and I have had zero luck with any local shops carrying the right size hoses for the 308/328 series. I ended up having to pay $400 for a factory one on the 328. But since then, I have bought some stock hoses for future use.

For the 348/355 series, I have not had to look but it would not surprise me to have the same problem. Out of principle alone, I would refuse to pay $1400 for an oil hose. AN conversion with some custom machining is the way to go.

Both Peter (his call sign on the forum) and Steve Magnusson have done conversion and they can point you to the right direction. There is also a hydraulic shop in Seattle (ex home of Boeing) that will make any of these lines for less insane money. I would send the hoses there and not mess with looking around. They do hoses for 747, they can fix yours.

    One more idea.

The 308/328 hoses are rebuildable. The fittings at the end unscrew, hose removed, new hose put on, and fitting screwed back on.

If the 348 hoses are the same, perhaps you can re-use the fitting.

by the way, fill out your profile to at least tell us where you are. Unless you are trying to hide from your ex wife....

My upper braided oil hose is seeping. I just ordered a new one. It should be here next week and I'll put it in. Bottom seems fine right now. Anyone know the size of wrench I will need to loosen the connectors. Thanks
