IMHO the key point here is that the name "KERS" is wrong :) F1 cars and, if I understand it correctly, the LaFerrari (god, that name!!) both already use a parallel hybrid layout, so there is no additional drivetrain complexity for using the engine to power the electric machine. It's the other way round, F1 is stripped of that technique by the rules, not by the technology or design.

I fully agree with you that the integration into vehicle dynamics, if they are as drastic as claimed, and the weight, although we don't know the battery's capactiy yet, are awesome, but the mere possibility of shifting the engine load point for battery charging is not.

No need to take my sleeping pill after reading that. ;)
Seriously now, hypercars need be nothing! They are so few of them that they make no difference to the planet. I for one am very happy that Ferrari decided against an electric-only mode. A true Ferrari should be heard at all times!

Ok.... how many here think this car is NOT better looking than the Enzo and NOT better looking than the F12. And, who here cares if the Porsche has a more "greener" technology?

Funny I only see one hand raised. :)

I honestly hate the thought of seeing hilariously high consumption V12s disappearing. The fact of the matter is that in order for these cars to be able to be made in the near future they MUST be greener. Do I agree with this? No. Is it a fact of the times? Yes. Look at LeMans, look at F1, look at NASCAR even. The push for green technology is HUGE.

I'm not into it and have a 10 year background in design. It feels like a half attempt to produce their next "timeless" model which, I know is an elusive goal ahead of time. Why carryover headlights? I do feel a weird pressure to like it because it is the next Ferrari supercar. I know of an ENZO owner feeling very strong right about now.

Let's say this balloons close to $3m for awhile, as of today I'd rather buy an ENZO and 458's to place around the world.

Your car is so freaking gorgeous.

Anyway I think one of the problems with Ferraris is that the vast majority of them are painted that absolutely awful abomination of a color called "Rosso Corsa"
Im sorry but Ferrari chose the WORST shade of red possible for their roadcars.
Now this thing in blue or orange? That would be something. Can someone do a quick photoshop of it?

Yes...let's spend millions of dollars on five hundred 220mph V12 super cars to make them greener that will be on the road probably less than 1000 miles a year.

Good use of resources and engineering talent--- and solves the problem! (NOT!)

This car is not a Prius. You won't be going to the Costco and pick up 48 rolls of Toilet Paper.

This may not be your intentional reason for going out in it, but if its as quick as they claim, you might have to pick up some toilet paper.

It's not a solution to the problem, it's a way of allowing these cars to still exist in a world where a large portion of people see Ferraris/Lamborghinis/Porsches/any other sportscar as the global-warming enemy. Efficiency is the hardest part of engineering. If you manage to create speed with efficiency, you are a truly effective engineer.

Sorry Ive always hated that particular shade of red. I think it drowns out a lot of styling details and is just generally a boring and terrible color for a car. The darker red is a much more flattering choice, whatever that is called.

STOP MAKING SENSE! Green technologies? Awesome stuff for everyday cars. I guarantee right now there are jumbo jets idling somewhere on runways waiting for takeoff that are "wasting" far more fuel than the LaFerrari, P-1 and 918 will ever use.

    PS-AWESOME FERRARI, SILLY NAME......

They have a darker red and I'm pretty sure I'm using that on an F12.

But, Rosso Corsa is probably the best variation of red in the auto world.

No way. It looks terrible in the sunlight.
It only really looks good in a studio setting.
Now that dark blue metallic you see on some 355s, now THAT is a gorgeous color.
If I had a Ferrari, it would be that color.

Florian, I think the really interesting data will come when we can directly compare KERS details between the current crop of supercars. Such things as : battery weight, battery energy storage capacity, how efficiently charged, etc etc.

It's sold out anyway, right? Ferrari SPA loves these discussions then.

To be real with myself, at the point I'm looking at a Ferrari supercar I'd likely buy this over the ENZO, F50, etc. based on the new technology factor.

Here is a quick, random assortment. None are hi-res...

Is it just me...or does this car seem like a gimmick? Its nice but not stunning, knock your socks off, although the rear is nice. I dunno, seems kinda juvenile..

This does not look terrible in sunlight to 99.999% of the people on this planet.

Man, have we gotten off course. First people didn't like how it looked under a cover and now its a debate over Ferrari's most popular paint color. Honestly, I'm dumbfounded (and dumb as well). :)

True, but I think the system themselves differ too much for direct comparison. The Porsche will have a very high capacity system for electric driving, whereas the Ferrari surely will be focused on power, not on capacity. I'm most interested in how these different approaches to hybrid systems will play out when it comes to the car's performance as a whole!

I don't disagree ... but you know that Porsche is literally wasting weight, from a pure performance perspective, if one of the goals is to drive xx km on battery alone. That's just not conducive to fastest laptimes on any track.

So we won't expect the KERS Porsche to be really competitive in laptimes, agreed?
