This is the internal (!) engine number of a 6-cyl.-engine block. It is not the official engine number that matches the chassis number. The internal number can be found on the top left side in front of the engine block (driver`s side). My question now: has anybody who restored a 6-cyl.-engine of a 3500GT Touring/Vignale, Sebring and Mistral ever found such number also stamped on the cyl.-head and on the oil sump? Yes I have found this engine number in several places both on the outside and the inside of the engine. On my Mistral engine it was stamped on every main bearing cap as well as the head and the oil pan. It is not consistant. For example on my Vignale spyder it was not on the main bearing caps
Yes, I have also seen the engine internal number on the 3 Sebring motors that I have rebuilt. This was stamped on the engine before it was assigned to an actual chassis or car serial number. The number was stamped on all of the cam journal cap as Eugene mentioned as well as the machined lower rim of the engine block where the pan is attached as well as the head inside the cam covers and also on the mating surface of the head which I saw on one that had not been surfaced since new. This number is notated on the build sheet for each car and the internal parts, i.e cam journals etc., are machine to fit each location and each block. I have always had trouble trying to inter change a part with another block. The number is also stamp on the out side surface of the oil pan near the back shoulder of the pan near the bell housing just aft the cooling fins Chris
Folks, thanks for the answers. Can you post a photo of the part of the head that bears this internal-no.?
