Patriotism, it has been said: 'the last refuge of the scoundrel'.

Sorry Cocky Boy, you seem to be merley an echo; a tick on the dog's back.

Let's not forget all the reasons for your collective paranoia, angst & despair.

    OK OK - I'm jealous!

Key point in the whole thread we do respect how you got to the position you are in... the discussion however is more about moving forward and whether or not there is a better way. For the record I believe gun control in America has as much chance of success as the Carbon Tax has of reducing green house gas emissions and therefore do not support either :)

BTW this comment seems to counteract the "I respect your position" one...

Comparing one risk to another unrelated one does not reduce the necessity to eliminating the original one. They are not related.

For example I have a pool which is secured against entry by a gate, which we keep locked. This is backed up by education as well as a pool cover which will fully support a child. Is this a risk? Certainly! I also have stairs... will eliminating the stairs reduce the pool risk...

In the same way suggesting that the risk posed by firearms is low compared to anything else is meaningless - you can eliminate any one of those risks without changing the original risk. The more risks you have the higher the probability that one of them will occur... thus eliminating any of the risks reduces overall risk :)

This is exactly the point. Your society chose to remove firearms as a risk. Frankly, that is a very primitive way to address a problem. But since you have taken this radical step, why not save the world by outlawing other offending nuisances? Swimming pools would be easy. Far more people drown than are shot by guns. Outlaw swimming in the ocean while you are at it. Absurd, you say? Yes. So is outlawing guns.

A dear friend and fellow F-Chatter recently died as a result of a fall down a flight of stairs. Had those stairs not been there, he would be typing away on this forum today. More absurdity? Yes. But if we can save just one life, isn't it worth it?

I'd like to see evidence of more swimming drownings than people shot.....in USA !

    Fascinating statistics here:

    http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/data/dvs/deaths_2010_release.pdf

    11K annual firearm homicides
    3.7K annual drownings
    26K annual falls
33k annual accidental poisoning & exposure to noxious substances

Based on these statistics, we should ban ladders, or at least severly restrict their usage.

Why is it primative  - it works :)

We are also addressing the problem of drowning by mandating swimming lessons in schools - as it is impossible to remove oceans :) - outlawing swimming in the ocean would be as difficult as outlawing firearms in America :)

As I pointed out earlier I don't believe gun control in America is possible... Australia though is different and it works for us :)

And this is really my point - blanket solutions are not universally useful, but targeted solutions can work.

Finally, once again, there is no link between the risk posed by firearms and any other risk... so can we put that argument to bed please :)

Re your last bit,the dog has a much better chance of catching his tail, than getting that mob to realize the bloody obvious...the firearm WAS ONLY DESIGNED TO DO ONE THING...KILL SOMETHING.
The other deaths have NO bearing on the gun debate.

Interesting. My Ferrari is designed to go 322kph. I have never driven it 322. I've never driven it 200. I have never killed anyone with a gun. You understand that there are several competitions in the Olympic Games where firearms are employed, right? Funny how an international body whose mission is to promote peace and understanding among nations endorses the use of firearms to do so. Or are they all backward savages, too? Our Homeland Defense Department has 1.6 billion rounds of ammunition on hand. If guns are designed to kill, our government must be preparing for something pretty big.

Sounds like you should give it to someone who knows how to drive it, then.

    Clearly wasted on you.

America has tried several blanket bans. Most recently, we waged a war on drugs. The silliest has been trying to prevent the use of a weed with psychoactive properties. Almost 100 years ago, we banned the manufacture and use of alcoholic beverages. Many of the arguments in favor of these bans are the same used by gun grabbers. They were wrong then and wrong now. If guns are designed to kill, then cannabis and alcohol are ONLY used to get high. What possible benefit to society can that possibly bring other than several thousand accidental deaths?

Ah, the personal attack. The tactic of someone who has no more arrows in his quiver. I hope that you appreciate that I used a non-gun reference. I haven't driven my car that fast because I haven't been on a road where I could safely or legally do so. I guess that the difference between Australia and America is that we don't just mash the gas pedal down and drive until the car goes off the road and we don't just fire guns off willy nilly. It's called maturity and self control. When children cannot play nicely, we take their toys away. Sad that a society of adults has chosen to treat themselves like children.

Australia must be an amazing place with so many people with such superior intellect. How does it feel to be so much smarter than everyone else with the audacity to express your opinions on the revocation of the God given rights of a society on the other side of the planet? I haven't checked, so did you weigh in on the Catholic's choice of a new pope? Did they make the right decision? The world is waiting for your approval.

You need to let the car move a little when you're turning the steering wheel to park in tight spots outside your favourite coffee shop.

Your front tyres will last a lot longer that way.
