I think that's a little unfair..... Seems to me they're saying they should both benefit, and I concur. My tv will kind of 'reside' on DTV 220, and I may even watch a few Indy cars races as a result. Win-win IMO. Cheers, Ian
+1 I think Indy might benefit. Although it will be confusing for the casual fan (if any of those exist anymore). Will be real hard to differentiate when F1 moves to those glorified Indy engines in 2014...
I thought overall that the coverage was excellent! The quality of the broadcast is fantastic and the commentary from Leigh, David and Steve was great as always. I see they have the 2013-spec tires on display in the studio which is something that was definitely needed to fill in that giant space.
P2 live. P1 delay ... and Australia only, according to the web schedule. And no PIP commercials during practice. I hope the advertisers learned from Indycar. If you run your commercial side by side with racing, people might see it, instead of running to the icebox or skipping over with the DVR. But, so far, I can't tell this coverage from Speed's. The announcers still can't tell the cars apart, yet. And they still spend too much time talking about the almost drivers from the western hemisphere. (The "almost driver" from the US, and the drivers from the "almost US". )
I must say, I like the set design much more than the cardboard box at SPEED. You can see the guys are actually using stylist for clothing, hair and so on. The whole feel is much more "slick". Content = same
+1 We already knew David, Steve & Will would be OK. I was pretty impressed by Leigh also. I thought he'd try to "dumb it down" like Varsha but he's obviously almost as knowledgeable as us (! ) and did a good job IMO. We've also got 30 minute pre & post race shows, which isn't Sky, but gotta be grateful for small mercies..... So far, so good. Cheers, Ian
A little earlier I heard a commercial for F1 on NBCS on a local AM radio station. BTW, NBC really needs to fix thelocation of the qualifying column, their logo, etc. Move it to the the far sides of the display. Highly annoying.
So Overall, I will say NBC has done a very nice job! I will fully admit I was very much a skeptic at first, but the coverage is definitely a step up from Speed. HD alone is far better than before! The NBC website is complete crap, but the TV is great. To others comments on Indy...I agree to the split screen during ad's, and Indy should be lucky to pick up viewers from overflow of F1 fans. I myself would occasionally watch Indy on NBC, but would much rather find ALMS, DTM, or a replay of Aussie V8's somewhere else even if its web based. Side note: BBC America was advertising F1 on NBC If they do those nice "venue/city/Quantas shots" like Melbourne always seems to have, then the NY/NJ race will look AMAZING on cable. -B
So. The first acid test for NBC....Will they pre-empt the scheduled programming to carry live coverage of the postponed Q2 and Q3? So far, they have made no announcement....not a good sign. Lots of weasel words, but no announcement that Q2 and Q3 will be covered live. I'm betting........ ....not.
I set my DVR anyway. The scheduled programming at 8pm ET is a soccer match between Seattle and Portland, marked "subject to programmer change", so there's a chance they may run the delayed quali instead. A slim chance, perhaps, but a chance. But that's the problem with these fly-away races. By trying to get it to air at a "nice" time in Europe, they run way too late in the day, locally. I miss the old days, when the races were pretty much all "noon, local". With the support races, that slipped to 2pm in many venues. But it's Bernie trying to overrule nature to control the broadcast times that sets ridiculous start times like 5pm, when sunset is 7:38pm (Melbourne) --- which can result in putting drivers on wet tracks without enough daylight to see the standing water. So, even if we don't get to see the rest of quali, I blame Bernie, rather than NBCsp. The problem continues tomorrow. Race start is scheduled for 5pm again, but sunset tomorrow is 7:36pm -- two minutes earlier. So Bernie better start doing his anti-rain dance.
I always like Matchett and Hobbs and it is a pleasure that Varsha isn't there anymore. And of course no room for Pinzor Wiener. Love Posey as always, he puts F1 in the right perspective. PS: Anybody catch that Crossover show before? Two noodlebrains playing F1 video games on the sofa comparing it to NASCAR. I crinched endlessly.
Mother Nature has it in for US F1 fans. Lime Rock Park has renamed the front straight for Sam Posey. Nice.
