There are several issues. The first to consider is that the cost to build a one off is a lot. If you do a small run I think it's fair to say that the value of your one off is diminished as it's no longer a "One of One". Also even selling the series cars for (pick a number) you would probably have to sell 20 to recoup your costs assuming 100K profit per which would be hard to do and if you could all you'd have accomplished would be to break even and wind up with your original One Off which no longer would be a One Off. These adventures haven't been business deals for me nor frankly do I see this one becoming one. I'm very lucky to be able to do them and hopefully my children will still enjoy them long after I'm hanging with Elvis.
Makes sense. It's good that these cars will be around, and we all know they can have clear influence on mass produced models, later on....
Agreed, they should be able to do everything custom. Are you sure the reason is not that if they really do make a bespoke car, they technically have to make [XYZ] others to do crash tests? How do you get around that? - the cost would be astronomical. e.g., I'm assuming P4/5 is registered with the State of New York as an Enzo? Can you do this even if you change bumpers, doors, headlights, windshield, etc.? Or at a certain point do you need to do crash tests for the USA? How will you address this with P 33?
Ferrari P 4/5 by pininfarina is registered as a 2003 Ferrari which it is. It's meets all required 2003 worldwide motor vehicle standards. Parts were tested, certified and crash tested as required. The same will be done with P 33.
Congratulations, i am sure it will be a stunner, and the name is a very nice tribute to a very beautiful car! It would be great if you could share with us the design process like maybe some sketches. All the best!
Cool, I always thought you have to crash test entire cars. Good to hear you don't have to build five P33s and crash 4 of them.
I haven't had time to read through this whole thread so this may have already been covered, but is there any chance this one will be based off the Alfa 4C tub/chassis? Either way, I cannot wait to see how this car develops. Best of luck with it Jim. Mark

here's a great design i'm inspired by, other than it is a single seater only, and Mono is not the best of names ....here in bare carbon, it has some wonderful "through body" aero! Image Unavailable, Please Login
Congratulations on the new project, should be fun. BTW, why not NA V8? I very much doubt a TTV6 would be either lighter or cheaper than an NA V8. Porsche's new 4.6 V8 in 918 is 140 kilos and it has 600+ hp. Also, packaging of the twin turbos and thermal management could pose an issue in a small car. Most V6s are 65 V angle, most V8 either 72 or 90 V angle, thus slightly lower CG. The only advantage is that is a bit shorter than a V8. Anyway, have fun!
Smaller and shorter are the issues. We developed our P 4/5 C V8 engine to 4.5 liters and around 600 HP but it's probably too big for this car. We haven't ruled it out though.
Glad to see they took Ferrari out of their article. Rumours: One-Off P33 Supercar to Debut at Geneva 2015 I must say their rendering isn't bad and does capture a bit of what a P 4/5 Can Am might look like. We've thought about Can Am versions and may try to make this one easily transformable Spyder/Coupe. Making flow through elegant is what we're aiming for as even thought I like LMP 1's they are a bit brutal for me.
I just read through the whole thread. Congrats Jim very excited to see the progress of this. Im sure its gonna be incredible. On another note i wish all of you would stop complaining about what section this thread is supposed to be in and it's validity and all off this hogwash. Folks aren't we just on here to talk about cool cars and stuff. More and more i get bummed when i read these posts because everyone is hating on each other and being judgmental, combative and ignorant. The first three pages if this thread are ridiculous. Its a shame Jim has to constantly defend himself. JMTC.
That sketch is quite stunning. Jim, whatever it may look like good luck with the project. Early tech goals sound incredible. I can't wait to follow along through the process! Cheers
