In fact it is not an uncovered prototype/mule but a one covered in a 95% standard 458 bodywork. I works like this at Ferrari. At some point there might be or have been the also typical black camoed mule.

That said, it could also be a mule for virtually anything, other future model or components, but 458 MC fits closely for now.

That is not the scud period it is alot of imagination do you think they just make the cars directly prior to release ? I've had all these cars that there is a 458 and nothing else

I'm going to explain the exhaust tips and the plexiglass on the 458.The exhaust valve has been closed and never opened to create alot of heat that's why the center is very black and the other 2 are chrome and still new. they are testing the plexiglass for heat that's why its not covered or tinted and vents are closed all with a regular 458 period

I would make the same guess. Am thinking that the 458 as a model will run longer than expectations so the "lightweight" model will also get a mild "facelift" for functional aerodynamics.

The fun is just beginning. The speculation is already heating up.

It would be awesome if they gave it the F70's "pointy" nose but I think it's too much retooling to do it.

What one can readily see from the above photo's are: the plexi-glass rear window as mentioned, the lower ride height as expected, and possibly a + 1 size to the tires (i.e. 245 section fronts and 305 section backs). I would also expect a modified rear diffuser and more prominent rear spoiler lip as in the CS and Scud, plus the usual carbon do-dads. I think the main body parts will remain largely as is. Best.

I am sorry I just remember to get to this, the 100 lbs figure from my memory was way off.

It is from the lightning lap No.7 2013 article from Car & Driver:

Very interesting. It makes sense that C/F add ons save little weight since they often replace lightweight nonloadbearing plastics to begin with. In those cases, it is merely decorative, which is OK if you like it and are willing to pay for it. When you start replacing aluminum with C/F, you can pick up some weight savings.

It was also interesting that the lift mechanism more than compensates for all that C/F. So add a motor, some gearing, and linkage, and you get a substantial weight penalty.

Correct, most CF parts on the current 458 is purely decorative with no weight saving. The rear CF "grill" bumper piece actually adds weight as it is straightly an add on, even though it only adds a few ounces. The only real weight saver is the CF manual racing seat vs. powered heated Daytona, could be a good 20~30 lbs each, also the CF intake manifold vs. the stock aluminum manifold, 2~5 lbs each is my guess.

C&D mentioning the lift mechanism being a substantial weight penalty was incorrect, the lifting mechanism is nothing more then a small hydraulic piston at the end of each shock, connected by hydraulic lines to a small hydraulic pump. 10 lbs max from the total system is my guess. I can't quickly locate a picture of the hydraulic piston from a 458, but the gold one below is off an Aventador and the ones below that is from KW suspension. They are all the same type of piston.

Decorations can be very expensive. High fashions, fine arts and diamonds........etc, they do nothing functionally but worth a whole lot.

The photos clear this up nicely. Thanks. It makes sense to tap into the hydraulics rather than to add the weight of a motor etc.

Going back to the question of how much less a lightweight 458 will be, it may be that it will not be much less than a current 458 with racing seats unless there are things like substitute C/F body parts, less sound insulation (which many will welcome), and thinner glass or glass substitutes (e.g., polycarbonate saves weight but costs big time).

You are welcome, it is fun to share with like minded.

I agree, the weight saving won't be much. Will just be the same as the Scuderia vs. F430, I forgot how much that was, but sure is not much to have a big impact in my mind to remember. The regular 458 is already very highly spec, there is really not much they can do unless they go extreme like the LaFerrari at a whole other price point. Just like the GT3 vs. GT3 RS........the RS have very little weight saving.

The issues with polycarbonate is they are not aesthetically pleasing on a street car and they don't age well.

I got a feeling that Bi-Color is going to be a standard option with no extra charge on the 458 Scud
They did it on the 599 GTO why not the 458 Scud

The Ferrari 599 GTO's historical racing liveries on the 458 Scud would also be very cool.

Best way to lighten the 458 will be to eat less or drink less and poop before driving--only keep 1/4 tank of gas in at all times...there you just saved $60K in Carbon Fiber and now can go 0-62 in 3.3 vs 3.4...
