Yup. Using the existing cleaned up and inconeled manifold and then the latest Garratts. I will keep and refurbish the old KKK's just in case in years to come someone wants to go historic. Decision, for now, was made after long chat with Michelotto.

    Tim,
Did you keep the specs of the Garret turbo's stock or add alittle something? Great choice of turbo and great that you are keeping the stockers.

I don't know about that. From where I'm sitting I feel pretty darn good but thanks for the suggestion.

Thanks for clarifying your basis of knowledge with this stuff.

And to be clear, good humor is always welcome and appreciated.

Michelotto makes a good point Tim, the much improved grip over the originally designed Pirelli P Zero tyres removes that wheel spin which would be the savior of the drive train and it's weakest link.
Oft it has been reported wheel spin in 2nd and 3rd gear when the turbos kick in in stock configuration.
Maybe an Avon full wet or inter would fit the wheel size you are mentioning.
Many Historic racers including F1 machines use Avon (readily available in England) to replace their original Firestone or Goodyear's.
Are you refurbishing, say magnafluxing of the gear sets and trans axle internals, I am not aware of the BHP limit of the 'stock' drivetrain. Using improved or larger turbos and improvements in inter cooling will definitely raise your bhp and torque.
Too light a flywheel will definitely improve throttle response, but again this adds to stress in the powertrain.
It sounds as if you have loads of experts helping you out which is great.
This is an exciting project and I personally look forward to the completion of the car.
A competition Ferrari F40LM is one of the greatest Ferrari's in my book.
Best of luck and as far as clutches, F1 technology has improved them a hundred fold from when your car was new.
They are smaller lighter and handle power more efficiently than ever.
Looking forward with great interest to your project which is really being done 'right' and with great thought and planning, congratulations.

Great to see the progress, and also great to read about your decision about the turbos. Really looking forward to see the chassis in Michelotto silver.

    Happy Easter!

Still thinking baout that cracked reverse gear. Possibly stress induced and might connect to the point about wheel slip. But I don't know why that should affect the reverse flange. Something to keep in mind.

Really just for those who are interested to see what the inside of an F40 engine looks like. Hopefully not a sight I will see again.

Valves all OK and heads are only a few thousand miles old but seats will still be perfectly matched. One bore slightly scored so that will also be polished out at Crosthwaites. Biggest delay will be the flywheel which is now in manufacture by Ark racing but will take four weeks and we cannot get on with the dynamic balancing until then so will finish engine strip-down and then focus on the chassis which should work well as we expect parts from Michelotto this week. Expect being the operative word.

Whilst it is an expensive pain to find all these issues, the plus point is we know we will end up with an absolutely perfect engine and drivetrain, top to bottom, fully matched and better than when it left the factory. Had we not torn it down completely we could have been facing much bigger bills in a few thousand miles.

I suppose that is my penance for buying an old race car.

Nice shots there. The bottom ends of these V8s are bulletproof. Is Crosthwaites replacing Nikasil to the cylinder walls?

Well picked up and I had not noticed it albeit next week when I visit and saw it in reality, I hopefully would have. I am sure the shop has an explanation but so much was awry with the engine it is difficult to say. I have asked them for their reasoning and will let you know.

Now that I look at the image it is difficult to believe I overlooked it as it appears to have almost been cleaned rather than anything else; I have never seen a head that clean.

That could also be something the shop was trying but they did not clean the valves and I'm sure they have a reasonable explanation.
Overall the build imo is going great.

Do you know if the pic was taken before the heads were refurbed? Reason I ask is that the heads seem to have leftover gasket material on them from removal. If that is the case that is a non-issue as they were '80s tech and I would ask about steel/cooper gaskets aswell as ARP head studs.

Yes it was. We are upgrading both gaskets and head studs so spot on.

Looking at it afresh in high res I am pretty sure it has just been cleaned up to inspect as it simply could not be that clean otherwise.
