Lightweight exhaust might save 10-15 lb and may cost $6K more (~ $400-600 per lb saved). Lightweight lithium batteries like the GT3 option New Lightweight Battery Option for the Porsche 911 GT3, 911 GT3 RS and Boxster Spyder can save 20 lb but costs about $2k US ($100 per lb saved) and are not as good as lead acid for normal use.
Racing seats ($8K option) may save 60 lb so this costs about $130 per lb saved.

If you use a conservative rough estimate of $150 per lb to take weight out of the 458, 300 lb would translate to $45K. This is what you would be paying for.

Eliminate clothes altogether, that should save a few pounds.

This looks nice, I'll be very curious to see what type of stripes appear on the 458 scud version.

Who the f**k cares? Let' keep to the topic... I always hate when a good and informative thread goes OT here at FChat, I'm not just shooting at you here. Best example is the LF thread before the car was released.

Every standard (i.e. not special editions) Ferrari has a 6 year life cycle, the introduction of an upgraded model is strategically chosen to keep sales up and to prevent people from flooding the used market. Now the 458 has been out for 3 MY's, the new version pops in to boost sales. If they were to only produce one version of a model for 6 years, a lot of people would buy used. So to those saying that it will be the Cali which is unveiled at Frankfurt, you are wrong. That car still has at least 2014 left in it's lifecycle. No new Cali in production until 2015 IMO.

    ABOUT THE PROTOTYPE PICS:

Very interesting photos of the prototype, but not in any way a visual reference for the finished product... As Bob pointed out, it's a tech-car, hooked up with a computer inside so they can run through different setups for the suspension, change the bite point of the clutch, alter the Manettino etc. This is all done via an OBD cable. If you don't quite get how this works, think of when you drop off a newer F to the workshop, the technicians have these diagnostic boxes which they hook up the the car from a cable in the cabin. That reads out a lot of info if there for instance is an error code, it will give it to them. Well the computers they use for testing work the same way, only that they allow you via an interface to actually alter some of parameters of the car. Crazy powerful tech, I know... I think the aspect which they have been working quite a bit with on this car is the Manettino, if the info from the OP is correct about it being simplified. I have a great deal of respect for all test drivers, to make a car with proper driving dynamics is a monumental task. This is also a lot of the reason why many testdrivers have an engineering or mechanical background as opposed to all being ex racingdrivers. They need to be able to pinpoint technical adjustments to a wide range of parameters and feel how the car responds to them very much in medias res.

It's being driven on the public road to test the liveability of the setup, and how it works in different situations (urban, country roads & to a certain degree citydriving etc.) They spend manymanymany hours doing these kinds of tests. No surprise you can't see any major changes to the aero because that's not the point of these prototypes... The plexiglass is also put there to test durabilty irl.

The thing I'm most worried about for the 458CS is the clutch, it's no secret the DCT unit has had it's fair share of reliability issues. I wonder how they will sort this out/if they have, considering the CS probably will have more torque, which is the arch enemy of any sporty twinclutch-system. There is a very valid reason Pagani and Lambo has avoided them.

Just came across this on the Weissach package (lightweight) for the Porsche 918, ALL of this only reduces the weight by 77 lbs.

For very performance-oriented customers of the 918 Spyder, Porsche offers the "Weissach" package. These modified super sports cars can be recognized at first glance by special colors and designs that are based on legendary Porsche race cars. The roof, rear wings, rear-view mirrors and frames of the windscreen are made of visible carbon. Parts of the interior are upholstered with Alcantara instead of leather, and visible carbon replaces much of the aluminum. Sound insulation has been reduced. The emphasis on performance is not just visual: very lightweight magnesium wheels reduce unsprung masses; gross weight was reduced by about 77 lbs. The benefits are experienced in further improved dynamic performance. Other references from motorsport are six-point seatbelts for driver and front passenger, optional film-coating instead of body paint, as well as additional aerodynamic body parts in visible carbon.

Seems like Carbon is less expensive since the launch of the 430 Scud
I hope they use it more liberally on the 458 Scud ie the roof in carbon would be nice

Any other inside info you would like to share ?

I'm Thinking a 50 horsepower bump instead of the usual 20-25 increase
