I am trying to understand how suspension actuators on my 550 work. I have taken the right front actuator off the car. The little gear on top of the strut was broken so I have ordered a new one from Ricambi.
I bench tested the actuator and the motor works - it just continues to turn which is obviously going to happen without something to stop it or to drop the voltage. I have read there are two hall sensors in the actuator. I know these are used to sense position and was thinking that these must be used by the ECU to determine when to stop sending power or to reverse polarity. But then looking at the little gear I see it has what looks like a flange that may stop the rotation. So can someone explain how all this is supposed to work?

John, I do not know about the function at bench testing, but when you test it on the car while it is connected and the switch turns on you should see gears turning to the right Then to the left and then stops. Broken gears needs to be replaced. Captain Z did the work on my actuators for electrical problems. Good luck.

The gear on top of the shock stops the actuator. It then turns in the opposite direction until the gear stops it. The ECU then knows the positions of the adjustment extremes.

Got it. That makes sense. Thanks.
