where and what would be the alternative to aftermarket ignition system parts for a 400i
About the only aftermarket ignition part I'm aware of is to use a MSD electronic ignition module to replace the Dinoplex box, which have been known to be sensitive to electrical surges (like from jump starting the car) and are expensive to replace.
Agree completely. The MSD "upgrade" is the only way to go if reliability (and increased performance) is your goal. the The currently available replacement distributor caps and rotors are of inconsistent quality. Specifically, the reproduction caps are decent, but the ignition rotors vary considerable in quality and correct fitment.
Not sure about cap and rotors. But for the replacement inginition system. An MSD 6AL with Blaster coils is a good option. Summit Racing also has a version of the same sytem that I've used before. Works just as well and cheaper. I had an issue with (1) summit box, called them an had a replacement the next day no questions asked. MSD is a little harder to deal with for returns.
The wiring sheet for installing a MSD 6AL2 ignition as replacement: http://www.dinoplex.org/PDF/Wiring_MSD6AL2_for_AEC104.pdf
On some of the newer provided MSD 6A boxes, a diode must be installed in the switched power lead, else the car will continue to run, even when the ignition is switch off. Great diagram, though...
Thanks! The run on problem with the MSDs is with cars which use a charge indicator bulb in line with the wire from the field coil terminal off the alternator, i think this is mostly a problem with older US cars, at least i did not have that problem with AEC104 replacements yet. Adrian
That makes perfect sense, but....I had a long walk through hell last year with a 400i that had an MSD put in by "the corner" garage, so to speak. And thinking about this more, they had recently rebuilt the alternators. Without a diode in line on the switched lead, I just couldn't get that car to turn off. Oddly, I have a similar set-up on my 365bb, with no diode, and she turns on and off, just fine.
i went on MSD's site last night. the 6AL2 box looks like a nice upgrade from the old 6AL box. Smaller in size and adjustable rev limiter and digital technology is a nice addition.
