So, as my OCD has taken over on my interior work, I was determine to get the ebrake boot (leather off) and to do so the rear lid cable (latch needs to be disconnected).

As I was doing this I said to myself (don't do it, it's going to be a PITA to assemble), but I did it and

    1) removing the pin does not release the cable from the latch since it's crimped as an assembly.

    2) I think to re-assemble, I'll need to release or loosen the cable from the deck lid latch at the back of the car.

Please tell me there is an easy way to resolve this....

It's been a while but I remember vaguely that I dissasembled the handle and removed it while the leather cover was still in the car by removing the pin.

Then there's a screw at the bottom that you have to remove. Once that's done I lifted out the entire black steel piece (that remains attached to the wire because it's crimped). I lifted it out, turned it 90 degrees and then lifted the leather cover out by pushing the piece into the opening.

So, in the end, that piece and the wire remained in the car the entire time while I refinished my leather parts including the handbrake cover.

It's not easy but also not hard to remove.

What becomes the major PITA is when you reassemble and you have everything back in and you attempt to put the handle back in....long nose pliers, no space whatsoever, several failed attempts, took me over 3 hours because I did not want to mess with or loosen the cable in the rear.

I think that was my mistake, it would have probably been much easier to do that. At this point, I think it's almost necessary or you can be there a long time trying to get that handle back in.

I tried to pull the lever assembly thru the leather opening and no way will it go without forcing it. I made the mistake of un-screwing the pin from the clevis of the cable which did nothing since the clevis is still traped in the lever assembly (which I did not see until too late).

Now, no way in hell will I get the pin back in without freeing up the cable.

This is now going to turn into a project for sure.

    Thanks for the reply Fab!

The way we cheat this is to cut a slot where the cable can fit through and remove the assembly.

I did force it but did not cause any damage. Even if it did, it's so small that it gets covered by the lip of the bottom once it's reassembled.

This was easier than I thought.

I removed the rear deck latch and the cables are held by a collar with set screw. So, I released the cable and then had pulled enough slack to set the release lever assembly on the rocker panel. I then cut a slot as recommended with my Dremel to free the cable.

Forcing the assembly thru the surround is not a good option at all, leather damage would not be avoided doing that.

Cutting a slot is the way to go, no question about that. However, if the handle is removed, you can squeeze the bottom out without damaging the leather unless somehow the size of that part and/or the opening is not the same on all 355s

I know Dave, you're right. With the handle on, it cannot go through. You have to remove the handle first. Once done, the bottom plate (with the cable attached to it) will squeeze through the opening.
