has anyone had experience bringing in a jag xj220?

i'm just wondering about costs..how hard is it? how long does it take...all the joys of importing a 'show and display' car...

My freind has two XJ220's. One he uses as a Sunday driver the other is a concours car only for shows. Scott has 12 cars in total moslty English and two Vettes

I do not know much about these cars except they are 6 cylinder and according to Scott they are not very fast and are stiff handlers. He was comparing thr XJ220's to pre 1989 Vettes whivh are not that good as drivers. The later vettes became world class sports car.

They are beautiful cars to look at, stunning in fact. I do not think they were considered sucessful because of the lack of power.

I do not know for a fact that parts are hard to find but I would expect that. They made so few cars.

I defer to an owners opinion, but that just seems a crazy statement to make, about what was for a short time the fastest car on the planet.

 

I can't help but laugh at your answer. The XJ220 was a commercial failure due to a number of reasons which i will not get into but lack of power is not one of them. It was the fastest car in the world before the release of the Mclaren and F1 and even today, it will hold it's own against most modern exotics. The brakes are the weakest point of the car imo.

 

Easy gents - Lee is a major car guy and his point of reference is different than most. He owns multiple "supercars", so when he says "low on power", he may be comparing that to things like ZR-1s.

Also, bear in mind that the Tom Walkinshaw XJR-15 took some luster away from the XJ220, as I recall largely because of the 12-cylinder vs. the 6-cylinder in the XJ220.

You are kidding too right? 542hp and 470lbs of torque, 3000lbs curb weight was hardly anemic 20 years ago and is still more than respectable. I own an XJ220s and it is not a fair comparison to the regular car as it weighs 700lbs less and has close to 700hp so i might a little clue about the cars. If you guys don't have an educated first hand opinion about a car, please don't say anything, it sure beats coming across like wankers.

Where do you service it? Jag dealers? Whats the current value? $200-250k?

 

The one we brought in, cost us 100k all in a few years ago. We sold it for a good profit, but it got repossessed, and it disappeared for a couple of years. I think somebody owns it now, as I have seen pic's of it floating around. They are cheap considering the amount of work that went into them. Truly a hand built car, almost from top to bottom.

Parts is another issue altogether. I understand that a place in the USA bought all the spares from jag, and are in the process of reproducing parts. Head gaskets used to be a NLA. All custom stuff...

I DID say to cut Lee some slack - if you could comprehend what I wrote, they you wouldn't have said anything - which sure beats coming across looking like a wanker.

Why don't you check out Lee's car background - this isn't the first time some 100-post neophyte tried to call him out, but his collection and previous ownership rivals most anyone on this board.

What are the stats of a 93 ZR1 ? Approximately 400hp and 400lbs of torque . Does this sound like the XJ220 is low on power compared to a period performance car?

There is a great product on the market, it is called smarties. Add some to your corn flakes every morning for the next 50 years , it will not help the keyboard warrior syndrome but it will make you smartier.

The fact is, Lee's comment that the XJ220 is slow and comparable to an 80's Vette is extreme to say the least. There was always going to be reaction but lets keep it civil please.

Dave not a C6 ZR1, he said pre-89 Vette. The more I think about it I wonder if he mis-read the title and is referring to an XJS?

Lee did compare to pre-89 Vette. I was suggesting his ownership of the C6 ZR1. Or a 458, Ford GT, Audi R8 V10, Mosler, Gallardo...the list is staggering. Lee is an upstanding man, he doesn't need me to fight his battles, but most of us could only dream of experiencing what he's experienced in automotive terms.

Anyone wants to call me a name - that's fine. I may deserve it more than most. To insinuate Lee - who is a near demigod in terms of car knowledge, stewardship, and experience - doesn't know what he's talking about is pure ignorance.

I happen to agree that saying the XJ220 is slow is extreme, but it doesn't warrant that sort of reaction. While I may not own an XJ220, I do own an E-Type, and Jag owners are typically gentlemen and should behave as such.

Just to clarify I have no problem with Lee, the comment that the XJ220 was slow wasn't Lee's opinion rather the opinion of his owner friend. Lee was simply passing on an owner's view.

Clarkson, in the Zonda comparison video, said the XJ220 had a body as wide as Arizona and an interior the size of Delaware, block and tackle steering, and wooden brakes. About the only thing he praised was the 220's blazing acceleration. Sounds pretty one dimensional and not much of a fun drive unless you're into quarter milers. Would be nice to get more real world long term perspective from owners before taking the plunge and buying one.

 

I know he said pre-89 vettes, but Lee has (or had) a C6 ZR1 so that may give a frame of reference to why his friend said it felt slow.

 

I love the 220. There are a few here in FL and one of the owners usually brings it out to the Celebration Car show (which is next Saturday, the 13th). It looks amazing in person...I love the sweeping lines.

 

Here's the only 220 I've ever seen in person. It was at Penske Wynn in the service area.

Sorry to cause so much anger. I never drove that Jag but that is what scott (he owns 2) told me. I assumed it was correct it is only 6 cylinder, but so is Porsche and M3's of old. He also said they were not reliable always fussy. They are a stunning car in appearance.

Clarkson has a few valid points but the car is not as bad as he makes it out to be. It is very big, not a lot of room inside, outward visibility is terrible and i find it hard to get in and out of. The steering is not bad, i don't know about the brakes in the regular car as the s has larger discs but still requires a lot of pressure as there is no brake servo. It is fun to drive however but i doubt very much i will use it as a daily driver in the summer time as it is way too impractical and awkward.
