No interest in The Gimp? I'm no guru, but seems more or less as "powerful" (or confusing ) as PS and is free. Super stable these days too. Cheers, Ian
I've downloaded that actually, I use it to overlap transparent layers into a single image ...I believe it's only a trail version too IIRC, as it's limited to 5? layers, and when saved, becomes a single layer when reopened Does a full version of Pshop not have more features & tools?
Hmmm.... I didn't think they even issued a trial version. I'm pretty it'll support more than 5 layers too. May be dependent upon what format you use to save if images get flattened (?) Not if you believe the folks at The Gimp site!..... My understanding (& again, I'm a little out of touch) is they're actually now a little ahead of PS with many new features etc. Cheers, Ian
I had to open it here to see; okay, it says version 2.6 my files made previously in it only reopened as a single layer, and were saved as .jpegs (for file size) ...but there is an "open in layers" tab under 'file' so depending on the saved file type it may? I can't see a limit on the opened blank page program, so is possible more than 5-6 layers, just going on memory? I know I did try to open a couple of design sites templates in it, but they didn't work, were specifically Pshop templates I guess? ...still, to have both this, and a full version of Pshop, I'd prefer.
Latest is version 2.8; Release notes here; GIMP - Release Notes for GIMP 2.8 A big deal is the "single window" interface. Goes on to discuss (previously confusing apparently ) layers & layer groups along with flattened images - You should probably upgrade...... Aren't jpeg's always flattened? it is the separate 3 window style, funny, but I don't find it confusing ...i'll check on the upgrade though I've been saving as .jpeg files, so the finished product can email, the other formats are much larger file size still interested in finding a full version of Pshop disk, if someone has LMK? thanks
Gimp is going to be far far far superior to an old version PS. You can't have layers in a JPEG so you must save it as whatever editable format Gimp allows (.PSD in PS).
I believe you guys, and trust your better experience with the programs, I updated to the Gimp 2.8, so i'll have to spend more time with it yet the reason I still need to acquire a full version of Pshop, is that so far the templates I need to work with, were designed & open in Pshop... ...still looking for / WTB a copy, thx
i'm not hip to how templates are structured, but in the case of the last two I needed to use, they wouldn't? so if I have a full version, even an older version of Pshop on my computer, than I can at least open them there, maybe to resave & open in another program?
Hmmm.... A quick Google suggests they shouldn't be a problem. You may have a version conflict of course - That would need further Googling..... Cheers, Ian
Can you upload/link to the templates? I'll try to open them in Gimp, I've never experienced a problem when working with PS files.

Yes & yes! This is one of those unanswerable "religious" debates.... Currently (until version 3.0 ships) it can only handle 8bit color depth, which remains the "standard" for jpgs of course. It's also a little weak in the CMYK color space. And it needs a plugin to handle RAW (ufraw) but it's supposedly not as good as Adobe's ACR. Beyond that it'll do everything that PS can do - Some will argue *more*. It is *different*, so switching between can be confusing, particularly if you know one well. However, you certainly can't beat the price, which is what started this thread in the first place..... Cheers, Ian
