had my mondi since 6/12.....major done,,,car is running solid,,,reliable ,,,all is good here !!!

my gas gauge bounces like the led lights on a graphic equalizer from 1988 piping out the sounds of spandau ballet....which sounds like normal function of a car with the name that ends w/ a "i"

filled my tank ....when gauge started laying solid on the big 'E"....i filled it up ,,,,it took 12.2 gallons and the trip odometer read 110 sweet miles..so that means im getting about 9 per gallon....that tank of gas was all around town driving no hwy...my research indicates...11 city ,,,,17 hwy ????

my car seems to be running like a top....i dont drive it crazy...shifting between 3 & 4 rpms...cruising...exhaust doesnt indicate unburned fuel...

my car is a "87 3.2....do i need to be concerned and have it checked out ???

any advice would be much appreciated....

much love to my fellow mondis boyz!!!!

Is it a US version, and, if so, do you still have an O2 sensor on it that is plugged in?

Blimey, I think I'm getting about 30mpg out of mine when I am going lightfoot and below 70mph though. My guage goes all over the place to, even worse than on my old Lotus Excel of the same era.

I don't get much more than about 10mpg and it's a 1987 UK spec 3.2 non cat. I can always smell exhaust fumes, not sure how normal that is for these cars?

Hey Peter, 10MPG! No way thats seriously bad and you must be very down on power running rich like that. I run a little MCC Smart Car day to day that does 65mpg, when I change over to the Ferrari I am always impressed with how cheap is is to run. 10-15MPG is Lambo Countach territory and that stings. I recon if you are not getting at least 25mpg normal driving then you should get it looked at. I can stretch mine out to 30+ MPG when I am going easy.
    All the best, Bell.

30 mpg is fantastic! My 3.2 does 8.5 km per litre, corresponding to 20 mpg(US) or 24 mpg (Imp). I think that's really acceptable. the worst I had was 7 km per litre or 16,5 mpg (US) or 19,5 mpg(Imp).

    Hi Bell,

I think its running very rich. You can really smell the exhaust fumes sometimes and i think the timing may be out as well as running rich.

However it goes and pulls so strong, and no lag at all. I will be having it looked at when i take it into Ferrari next month to get my oil leaks sorted on the oil cooler and gear linkage seal that goes into the engine. I will see how it goes.

Then again i must say that as we all know the fuel gauges are like Fred Astair, they dance around on that dash:)

My 84 pulls about 18 mpg on the highway if I keep below 75. In town, probably 12, but I tend to exercise mt right foot a bit!

Bell, 30 mpg is quite impressive, is it all down hill for you because there is no freakin way I can get 30 out of mine. At best, I get 15mpg but I tend to have the full orchestra playing when I drive! The fuel gauge on mine does swing when its less than 3/4 full, at full, it shows FULL and solid.

I'm usually around 20mpg highway (and most of my driving is highway) in my '88 3.2. I'm pretty pleased with that rate of fuel consumption; I'm not driving 55mph all the time (well, really, ever), but I'm not spending a lot of time over 90mph either.

Ha ha, Gents (MEN), like it, that's funny....
Yes there is the US vs IMP Gallon thing going on here and also this kind of mpg is 'poncy' driving and not spirited in anyway.

I tend to drive light footed in the busy UK commuting traffic that always moves but where there's nowhere to go even if you overtake, so MAN..ly driving is out.
However I have to admit I have yet to do a whole tank of seriously spirited driving continuously and so have little idea of how much the Mondial uses when driven in anger.
At Christmas I was drifting and doing quite a bit of power sliding of the car in the wet, and there was no way it was doing 15MPG, but it probably was doing 20MPG that I would conceed. ;-)
However you are talking to a Chap that runs a MCC Smart car as a daily runner and at 65MPG you could say that it sips its fuel from a fine bone china teacup little finger cocked high in the air just like my Aunt.
Now if my old Ferrari started guzzling fuel like some bloke stranded in the desert guzzles water at an oasis then I would be pretty miffed, since fuel in the UK is now at a whopping £1.40LTR thats $8.54 per US Gallon to you!
In fact one of the comments I regulary make to folk is that of the amazing economy of this car and it's a major factor in the fact that I can't stop using it all the time.
Anyway I'm a very happy Chappy with my Old Lad!

    all the best, Bell Bloke.

PS. Don't forget to catch Ron Howards 'RUSH' yes, I know it's Formula 1 and you guys don't recognise a High Octane Motor Sport that has curves in both directions, but 'YOU MEN' drive Italys finest, so you must have some knowledge of it's existance....

It looks bloody good I must say, and harks back to the halcyon days of racing when every real athlete driver, got up late, chain smoked all day, drank heavily and shagged any girl who vertured within 20 yards of the pit lane.
Ah yes those were the days when girls kept laps times, held up score cards on the pit wall, and could instantly recognise a driver by the slightest flash of his helmet.
In those days when you won a race it was laurel leaves round the neck, followed by double handed ejaculation of bubbly and then off to the caravan for a post race debriefing with some female admirers.
These days it's 4 hours in a press conferance thanking the 'Team' and Vodaphone....
    God how dull!

Austin had a Ferrari cruise last week with over 15 Ferraris in attendance. We drove about 600 miles Saturday and Sunday and cruised Central Texas. I averaged about 19MPG, and that was with spirited driving.

I bet I could get 20-21 MPG with speed limit driving. Will know this summer as I drive to PA.

I keep record of all fuel refiling in my 1990 t cabrio (Euro spec, catalyzed), since I own her (29K km = 18K miles ago), so my measure is very average, but very precise.
I use only Shell V-Power 100 octane premium fuel (in all these years I had just 1 refiling with standard 95 octane fuel).
My average fuel consumption (all included: servicing, engine warming, ....) is 7,0 km/l = 16,5 US MPG = 19,8 Imp MPG.
    Ciao

In my 87 3.2 cab, the best I've ever gotten is 23mpg US. I was driving at a steady 60mph (thought I had an issue) for a full tank, right around 300 miles on that stretch.

Never gotten that good again. I get close to 20 on the highway, usually about 19. Worst I've ever gotten is in the 15 range but I've never been in a place that was all city driving.

I'd recommend getting the car out on the PCH and taking it to San Francisco. Get a nice long drive on it and see how it goes. Maybe take 5 back home. I've found a nice long drive at highway speed really makes them run nicely. Then you'll know what it's capable of. At a steady 70 I'd expect to get around 19.

After putting 20k miles on my car I also get the feeling that it does a bit better on the highway with the top up by about 1 mpg.

I can't say that your 9 is terrible. With the saddle tanks and the hard angle of the filler tube and the slope of the gas station there can be some variance in how much gets into the car. I've seen that variation on my car. I usually fill it with the passenger side low (US) and then the nozzle shuts off I let it settle (gurgle) for a bit and then add another 1/2 gallon or so. I top it up pretty good but also do a lot of driving. I don't fill it to the top and then park it lest it expand and make problems.

Take the average of three fills and see what you get.

Then that gives you a "tool" (that itself may be broken ;)) to look into the A/F ratio. At warm idle, if the voltage on the O2 sensor single wire (when plugged in) relative to ground is not "wandering" from 0.1~0.2 V DC to 0.8~0.9 V DC every few seconds = you can be sure that you have a problem that needs fixing.

Are you guys driving hybrid Ferraris? Down hill driving only? 19 mpg in San Francisco? 30 mpg on the freeway?

I am getting about 12 mpg in the city, lots of stop. About 19 mpg on the highway, 55 to 65 mph. Very light on the right foot. No ac.
