There is a story about an original customer who requested yellow - McLaren sent him a model painted in the requested colour but he was not sure. He asked if they could paint a full size car that colour for him to look at which they did (at customers cost). When the repainted car was ready the customer walked in, looked at it for a moment, said "I'll have it in silver", and left! :)

Just found this thread via Google- the "friend of the owner" was car photographer Dave Wendt, who took a lot of great shots of the F1, and also the owner's Enzo- they've both been prominently featured in his car calendars.

Here's a short story about the trip.

Here are the Enzo and F1 together:

This news is about 6 weeks old, but has gone viral in the past 24.

The claim of zero mileage is simply not true. All F1s were given a significant shakedown run when production was completed - somewhere in the range of 100 miles in most cases. The cars are also test driven by a McLaren technician each time they are serviced. In reality, this car has approximately 300 kms on the odometer and was last serviced in June 2010. It is true that otherwise, the car has been stored by its original owner and not driven.

The chassis is #060 and the asking price is very high in the 7 figure range.

What do you think it would cost to have McLaren turn this museum piece into a reliable driver again, Peloton25?

Probably not too much at all, relatively speaking. Though it hasn't been driven regularly, it has been kept in climate controlled storage, started up occasionally and has been serviced through the years. I wouldn't consider it a basket case by any means like some cars that are allowed to languish unused.

The important things would be the tires, brakes and fuel system. If you wished to keep the exterior and interior unchanged I suspect the factory would give the car a clean bill of health for a relatively reasonable sum. The big expense you might incur is a change to the rubber fuel bladder depending on how recently that has been done - that does require removal of the engine and I think the cost for that process including parts is about $30K.

If someone is considering the purchase of this car it would be wise to speak with McLaren Special Ops ahead of time. I know they are aware of this car already and are probably prepared to speak to its current condition and what it might require if using it is the intent of a new owner.

That's a lot higher than both the numbers I heard. This is turning into a fish story.

Well I was not involved, but a lot of other people with knowledge of this transaction are not telling the same story that Don is.

Interesting. I certainly wouldn't claim any more knowledge than what Don told me. It would be interesting to hear from everyone that was involved give their number. Regardless, Don and someone very close to Don gave me the same number. That number, along with Pope Enzo number. I know for a fact that he turned down 7.5 for the F1 over 6 months ago.

Just found this thread and I have no choice to share... I took these at Lake Forest Sportscars during the unveiling event of the MP4-12C last winter. This #7 F1 race car is the actual one shared by Senna and Michael Andretti & I have plenty more pics of this car.
Don't know who loaned the (white) F1 for this event, but what a sight seeing these 3 like this.

Great shots of chassis #031. The owner lives locally and also has F1 chassis #001 in his collection.

The Formula One car still belongs to McLaren Racing and is an MP4-8.

I took this pic during the '98 Brian Redman International Challenge at Road America. This thing did touring with us and when it blew by me going into Canada Corner it was pretty much an automotive holy experience!

Sweet photo - that's GTR #12R which raced and won the BPR Championship in 1996. That car happens to be in the same hands today as it was in 1998, with a small gap in between. It is now road registered in the UK and has made an appearance or two at Goodwood. It was also part of the F1 Tour in Italy last year where I took this.
