I've been looking to get a F355 for a while and a Challenge version is available for sale. Seems like it could be registered for the street...

I've driven the F355 extensively before and wonder if the Challenge would be a much worse car to own for occasional use. I would also drive it to and from the track...

Did search through old threads as well...

Also -- what kind of PPI would I do on a Challenge and what are things to look for?

A bunch of things to consider:

    1) Do you need an inspection in your jurisdiction to register a car from out of state/province? If so, what things need to be done to pass inspection?

    2) Challenge cars don't have: heaters, DRL's, windshield washer resevoirs & pumps, parking brakes, shoulder seat belts, airbags, headlights (possible some may have), self cancelling turn signals, a horn, etc.

    3) Challenge cars do have: really stiff spring rates, spartan interiors, racing clutches, etc.

You should look into the costs to convert back to a street car in your purchase price. Fortunately my car was driven on the street and had most of the modifications that make it legal and comfortable to drive.

I am thinking to register in a state where there are no inspections? Or on dealer plates? Otherwise I don't think these cars would ever pass in any states -- i.e. no headlights?

The only issue from the above list are headlights for occasional night driving; the other ones I don't think are major points? Maybe I'm wrong but I can see living without them?

Why convert? If I could drive the car back and forth to the track and occasional drive on the street it would be great.

Buy it. Enjoy it. Drive it like ya stole it. If you decide you want something else, then sell it!

You may not think they are major points, however the region where you intend to register the car may have something to say about them. That is why I brought up these points as they are the usual obvious things most gov't regulations specify. You really need to bone up on the regulations where you intend to register the car. Then there is the insurance question. Have you talked to your insurance company yet? I looked into a yellow F355 Challenge before buying my car but there was too much risk and too much that needed to be done to even hope to get it road legal. It was also a european domestic market car which added another level of complexity to the deal.

Driving on the street with 2000+lb springs will get old in a hurry.
