Was asking myself the question on how to make a 348 sound better and more like an f1. Close as possible to a 355.

    my present set up is

straight pipe + capristo stage 3 no values and it sounds good. Although i never heard it outside the car yet, this week i hope i find someone to drive my car so i can hear it :)

was thinking of aftermarket headers, i read something on that awhile ago but no one ever mentioned the tone it gave. Will it compliment the capristo?

Will a different air filter help ? i have stock.

: i dont like the muscle car exhaust note..

    thank you guys.

Ernie has custom exhaust made for his 348. He may have a sound file.

Personally, given the cost I would leave the stock headers alone. Ernie only did this in reaction to what he believed was a failed header. Facing replacement or new at similar cost, he opted for the custom experiment for our benefit. I would not go out of my way to change the factory design as they flow pretty well and do not suffer from the 355 failure problem.

The cool thing about 348 headers is that, unlike the 355 design, the EGR plumbing is to the exhaust ports on the heads and not to the headers so you are pretty free to do whatever trips your trigger. There is a space limitation as you try to fold the header plumbing into the narrow area ahead of the cats. Ernie's included a mod that customized that portion as well.

Bottom line, it's a lot of money for very little benefit. Change cats and the exhaust and you are there.

My headers were not inexpensive to have made, but I'm happy with them. Peak to peak hp, for my entire exhaust system I gained +12 hp, peak to peak torque +4.7lb/ft tq. Over the curve I have +14 hp over the stock headers/muffler. At 7470ish rpm the stock header were making 287 hp to the hubs, where my Hytech headers/gothspeed exhaust was cranking out 301 hp to the hubs. Under the curve was the biggest visible gain in torque of +12.6 lb/ft tq. The extra torque took off right when the factory headers fell off at 4200 rpm. At 4700 rpm the stock headers were making 214 lb/ft, while my custom system was pumping out 227 lb/ft tq.

Keep in mind I have other modifications to my car other than just to the exhaust system, with more to come. ;)
