Stick on Shields.. Your thoughts?

Can you post a pic of the shields?

 

Harry, I've got Yoshis on my car. I like shields but in my opinion Yoshis look far better than the plastic resin ones Ferrari make which look a bit plasticy (basically because they are). Just be warned there are several different enamel shields out there and, having seen most, Yoshis are easily the best. I ran a thread a while back comparing them all, will see if I can find it. Anyway Resin vs Yoshi.....

Hi Ace. Pic above shows the standard resin shields Ferrari do for this purpose which is what most of the dealers in the UK put on. A Ferrari Main Dealer I know hadn't seen Yoshis before and when one of the guys there saw mine, he loved them. In fact a week later he was putting a set on a car for one of their regular customers having shown that customer the Yoshis on my car Put my car next to one with standard OEM indented shields and you've got to get pretty close before you can tell the difference. The edge of the yoshi tends to reflect in the paint and 'draw' a line around the shield where it reflects which looks pretty much like an indent from more than a few feet. On a 348 (other than GTC) indents weren't an option but I think Yoshis are very much the next best thing.

 

I know I am probably in the minority but I have used both and actually prefer the resin. The colors were the same but I liked the way the resin seemed to "blend" into the sides vs the straight edge of the metal verson.

 

I can see what you mean. I don't massively dislike the resins tbh just slightly prefer the Yoshis. If I had to list in order of preference it'd be yoshis and one of the other types of enamel close behind, resins, lastly all of the numerous other types of enamel shield. That's just for me. I do think the Yoshis look better in real life, the edge isn't so obvious, and they do look more pricey (which they are).

The decider for me was driving onto the military camp where I worked with the resins on. The guard asked me if my car was a replica (knew me, didn't know I had a Ferrari), I said no and asked what made him think that? He said "plastic badges." And pointed to my resins. They had to go. I did hit the throttle (got a custom Nouvalari Supersport) and asked him "What do you think?" His reply was "Sorry sir, my mistake."

You gets what you pay for Like anything with these cars the cost goes up exponentially with the quality. The £1.50 ones are rubbish, £20 will get you something a bit better, £80 are actually not too bad, £300 are the best (short of stamping your wings and getting OEM, an option on the later 355s, I believe).

 

Have a look at the shields thread I threw up before, link above. Those others are metal and enamel as well. Thay are cheaper but they're not as good. I compared with genuine shields on 430s, 458s etc and the Yoshis were by far the best. Nothing wrong with some of the others, they just weren't as good.

 

If it didn't come from the factory with them, I think they look like a silly sticker.

 

Do you understand what the shields represent, what the history is, and why certain cars have them? Just curious, not being argumentative ( well, not much anyway )

 

I agree 100%, if they are not factory don't put them on.

 

There are always going to be the purists and I have no problem with that. I put Yoshi's on my car and I think it adds a bit of class and heritage to the overall look. I have seen the, "sticker-type," on other cars and think that tends to look somewhat cheap. But at the essence of this issue is really making one's car one's own.

 

Got to agree. What I find 'amusing' is that the "purists" often don't know why certain cars had the shields and why some didn't - they don't know what they represent. As such they don't really have a decent argument as to why an FF or Cali should have them and a (for instance) 348 shouldn't. I'll give you a clue - whether they are on from the factory has absolutely nothing to do with what they represent or whether a true "purists" should argue for their presence or otherwise. I'll just leave you with 4 shots of cars with "silly stickers", only one of which shouldn't have them on. Will let you choose which that is

The sticker types come from Ferrari, maybe not applied at the factory but sold by Ferrari so which is the more legit? Just asking.

 

Those are the British ones which are the first ones I compared to the Yoshis on my thread above. Not bad, I bought a pair to do a direct comparison.

Those resins sold by Ferrari are every bit as 'legit' as a factory applied indented shield on a Cali. Whether people like them as much is their business but they are just as authentic.

 

I personally like the badges from india. Great bang for the buck and holding up great
Remember india can still use the hi voc paint unlike the USA. Wish I could get the car paint here in the US they sell over yonder

 

so what's the significance? assume the 348 shouldn't have them (since you mentioned it in your post).
