412 steering box

Still available new from Ferrari, around 2200 pounds.
No internal bits supplied by Ferrari, may be possible through ZF ( the maker of the box )
Could also be reconditioned, might not be cost effective though.

I remember someone mentioning (a while back) that ZF rebuilds them for around $800.

Are you sure it's the box and not the dogbone, tie rod ends or ball joints? It's could be a little play in everything.

On a side note, how does everyone lube all of those moving parts in the front end? I went to NAPA and got an attachment that goes on the end of the grease gun, its a long needle. You can carefully pull the rubber seals back just enough to get the needle in and grease away. I think mine were bone dry the first time I did this, made a big difference in the steering. It should also help with wear.

 

100% correct and good tip on lubing the ball joints.

Further to your comment on play in the linkages, I suspect that people initially tighten up the steering box in a misguided attempt to cure front end play, which then ends up ruining the steering box as it's been over tightened.

I googled zf steering boxes and remanufactured zf steering boxes. Just find the zf number on the zf box, and you're in business, amigo. As always, Enzo didn't inventa the wheela...he just borrowed it froma someone esla. Jq.

 

If there is play in steering box it is very easy to see. With tires on the floor and a helper at the steering wheel you can clearly see it the output shaft is moving with the easy play in the wheel. I agree that some might over adjust but it is hard to mistake where the play is. Zero play should not be the objective.

I bought a used box and am happy that I did. It should be good for a few more years and a lot of miles. "Mostly British" may have another left (400i). He had a hell of time separating it from the housing (mine came out easily) so I am sure he will charge more for next sale.
