hi to everyone. i've been lurking for a while and have a couple questions about a 575 purchase. i am ready to pull the trigger when i find the right car. in fact i'm going to go check out this car later this week:

Used 2003 Ferrari 575M Maranello F1 For Sale in the San Francisco Bay Area | VIN: ZFFBV55A230131543

i'm not that keen on a nero interior. the car seems priced a little high. are there some simple heuristics i could employ to determine a fair price? i don't mind overpaying by $5k for a car i really like rather than keep trying to swing a perfect deal.

    thanks.

If you haven't fallen in love with the car, keep looking. You will be spending your time inside the car, so you should enjoy your surroundings. A quick look on Autotrader.com and I found cars with tan, bordeaux and sabbia (sand beige) interiors. The sabbia is with a grigio ingrid car (my car's combination) and is fairly cheap from an individual seller, rather than a dealer. Not many guys here are fond of that color combo, but it is rarer than the typical, rosso corsa, nero and grigio titanio or grigio silverstone cars you usually see.

I would say that car is 90-95k. 111k is high for an F1 car without HGTC.
If you want an F1, there are lots of them for sale.
There is one in the Fchat classifieds here in Florida for 93k. Also silver over black.

For a well optioned, low mileage, clean, well maintained, expect to pay over $100k. There are some marginal ones out there. Make sure it was recently serviced by a reputable firm. Btw, I think that color combo is very nice. Happy hunting.

thanks a lot for the "advices" as Arnold would say. I guess I'm just trying to make it easy on myself. I live in sf and ideally I'd like to do business with a dealer so I could trade in what I currently have, test drive and then arrange for a ppi, etc. it just seems to be so much easier if it all is happening in my backyard. I just have to change my mindset. thanks again.

I actually think that is a beautiful car, but the price is excessive. Keep looking!

more options on dawydiak car...almost half the mileage and it's an '04. it's been listed awhile...iirc...started at $119K to $110K to $90K to $79K

bigger fan of the light contrasting stitching w nero instead of red stitching on nero

glovebox leather on the sf car looks like it's bubbling

As long as he says he's not keen for a nero interior, I think he should look elsewhere, regardless. Every time he gets in the car, it will gnaw at him. My $.02.

You've gotten some good advice here. If you don't like the black interior, don't buy the car. Figure out HOW YOU WOULD HAVE ORDERED IT FROM THE FACTORY, and search for that car. Don't worry if it's far away, as there are people around here who can help with that situation too.

It took me over two years to find a red 456M GT with shields and a tan Daytona interior. No regrets, no buyer's remorse, and I love it. So, take your time.

    Cheers,

    George

thanks again to everyone for the sage advice. rather than taking the "easy" way out i'm going to embrace the pursuit of finding the car that i really want. i'll post to this thread with possible candidates from time to time to see what others think of them. soon i'll be blasting through wine country with a maranello instead of the maserati which i currently have.

Black seats are hard to live with in a sunny area like Norcal because they get so hot from direct sun. And never buy a convertible (or a barchetta) with a black interior.

    hi again,
so... I just got back from a test drive of the car I initially asked the forum about. the car is in fact flawless, at least cosmetically. It had a belt service done 2/12. it is a one owner car and this dealership is the one that sold and serviced the car. the black interior looked better than I thought it would due to the contrasting stitching. the car drove very well and I really enjoyed the test drive. the negatives to me are the price, although we didn't get into any negotiations so I don't know how much movement there is and more importantly, to me, is the fact that the car as it is is so understated that it kind of "disappears". I'm not a "lambo" type guy but I would like the car to make a bolder statement which I think it would if it was a different color, etc.

after having checked one out I definitely want to get one now. since this is a bare bones car what options are desirable? any must haves? was parking distance control offered? what would give it more visual impact, modular wheels, side badges?

    the bug has bitten.

I have a black / tan 575M and this car may even more “disappear”. A red Ferrari is much more recognized. I prefer to go below the radar and that the car does not attract much attention. If you would like to have more attention, buy a red or yellow one.

    Some nice options:
    - Daytona seats
    - FHP (Fiorano Handling Package) for improved (more sportier) handling
    - HGTC (Handling GTC = Grand Turismo Coupe). Similar to FHP but in addition with 19 inch rims (see below), faster shifting times (F1) and CCM brakes
    - 19 inch modular rims (which are part of the HGTC but can could also be ordered as an option)
Parking distance control was never an option offered.

Color will have the most important effect on visual appearance IMHO followed by wheels.

I was afraid that my "disappear" comment would be misinterpreted. I don't want the kind of attention that a yellow car attracts. by "disappear" I'm referring that the car is indistinguishable from other cars. it's a fine line and sometimes one or two subtle cues can make a huge difference.

For the exterior, shields and 19" modular wheels are desirable, as are color-matched or color-contrasting brake calipers.

On the interior, Daytona seats would be the big one, with contrast stitching and piping even further options.

Marcus has a point about the subtle colors on a Ferrari: It allows you to go under most people's radar. I didn't buy a Ferrari because I'm shy, though, and a red Ferrari does get a lot of attention.

For a bolder, more visible color, you have the options of a vinyl wrap and PlastiDip. Check out on YouTube what is being done with PlastiDip--it sure surprised me. And either way,it is easy to go back to stock or to yet another color.

Sorry for misinterpreting. I prefer dark colors: The connoisseur will know it is a Ferrari and all others have no clue what kind of car this is (or think it is a Mustang :)).

BTW: I am dreaming about a 512 TR since many years (and some when the time will be right to buy such a beast). This car has to be red / tan in my eyes. It is a kind of the opposite of a 550/575. Where the Maranellos are under the radar a TR/512 TR is in the middle of the stage telling everybody “hey, I am a Ferrari!”.

As usual: Each to his own.

I REALLY don't want to offend anyone or their car...

silver is the most popular color for cars now, so that might have something to do with the car I was looking at. I'm thinking that tdf with a "light" interior, modular wheels and shields would achieve the look I'm going for. again I'm a real believer in "to each, his own" so I'm NOT criticizing anyone's car choice.

I forgot to add I was impressed with the driving position and visibility. outstanding.

People here are pretty laid back. We all understand everybody has different taste and preferences. Most 456 owners, for example, seem to prefer silvers or grays and black (Or TDF blue), while I wanted the classic red/tan for a front engine V12 Ferrari. Red/tan 550/575M's are my favorites too.

The only color I don't think really works on the 550/575M is yellow. I saw a yellow one once, and it just wasn't right to me. And, I love yellow! I had a Chrome Yellow 1974 FIAT X1/9 in high school and college, and I think it is the most proper color for the mid-engine V8's like the 355/360/430. The reason why is the Dino heritage: The classic color for the 206/246 was yellow. In fact, I'm shopping for a yellow 360 stick right now.

Black, of course, has a gravitas all its own. No Ferrari looks bad in black, and when they are detailed to the nth degree, they turn heads just fine. In fact, I'd buy a black 360 stick if it had the rare sunroof and a Daytona interior. And black 612 Scaglietti's look like the Batmobile.

    Cheers,

    George
