Why Do Guys Sell??

I agree with your statement. I think that the worse part for me is extra attention which I don't like. I may have liked it more 10 years ago when I bought the car but I also find it annoying. That is what I think about when I consider selling it. I have my eye on a new black 2014 Turbo Porsche Convertible. Modern, super fast, cheap to service compared to my 355 and just blends in better.

I love 458's and a black one would be a little more low key than Rossa Corsa but the no stick option is a deal killer for me.

 

If you want to attract a chick, buy a Mercedes. Why? She can see herself driving it after the divorce.

Honestly, they attract the wrong attention. It's also disappointing that they are becoming bobbles of the elite class (Kardasian's, Beiber, etc) just because they draw attention,not because they enjoy it for what it is. They've become a symbol of the rich and not for sport. I can't see Steve McQueen driving a new Ferrari today.

I've been owning them since 1980. I can tell you, there's a huge difference in the reason people were drawn to them back then and now.

It's disappointing what I've seen. Someday I hope it reverses.

I haven't sold a collector car since 1972 and I regret selling that one.

I say collectable because my 308/TR/Maser we're daily drivers.

 

I hate to admit it but people get bored, myself included. I usually sell cars every year, I have had my f430 for 2 years and now want a 458, why why why

 

That I will agree with. I bought the car because I love the car. The Ferrari thing is neat but the real love for me is that sound. After seeing the movie LeMans and then going to the F1 races at The Glen, I just fell in love with the 12 cylinder sound. The TR reminds me of that.

As for people today......what can you expect, they really aren't car people. They are about impressing someone else. I just think when you buy a car like this....their opinion doesn't count. The guy who is impressed........me. Lucky to say I have one. Even luckier to think I would ever get one. Best part......Everday when I open the garage before going to work.....I see the cover and a little smile goes on my face every day. Nice way to start the day for me. Makes me feel good about me and from where I have come. I hope it puts a smile on others face for the reasons they purchased theirs. I really believe I am one of the lucky few to own such a wonderful car.

I have only sold a ferrari because of the want to purchase another one and they usually overlapped each other which always gave me the ability to do a first hand comparison. So over the past 25 years I have only owned 5 and that helped in truly understanding each model that I owned. The last overlap was for three years and was between a 355CH(owned for 10 yrs) that was street driven and a 512TR(bought 3 yrs ago)
I have owned Ferraris because I was drawn in as a kid by the engineering artwork behind the cars and can't imagine my world without one.

Actually, stars have been in ferrari's since the inception of the brand. The difference isn't the car, it's what we define as stars today ..... Paris Hilton is no Sophia Loren.

Raquel Welch had a 330 GTS. Yes, I understand that stars were drawn to them. But it seems today that these "stars" buy them not because they like them but because it's just a status symbol or a way to get on TMZ.

Few knew Raquel had the car. Today, everyone knows that Justin Beiber has one.

 

I think it's the media more, than the actual stars...I'm sure soupy sales may have had one, there weren't any camera's back then like today. Again, we have to define stars of today in different context.

Remember when Kobe Bryant commissioned lambo to make an automatic for his wife after the scandal - it's just the way it is today.

 

No, it's not the PR thing. Its the REASON for the PR thing. People like the Kardasians buy them just to self promote themselves and their wealth. That's the difference.

Ferrari can't control who buys a car. But, the fact that these types are drawn to them is disappointing.

Kim Kardasian and Justin Beiber and the other Hollywood social media elites have as much in common with Steve McQueen as a gold fish has with a Great White shark.

I can't see Steve buying a new car today. I can see Kim loving it.

 

Never owned a Ferrari, but I have no problem trading in and out of cars once I find something new and/or better. A lot of people just get bored and swap cars all the time if they can afford it.

Why is owning a Ferrari any different than owning a Porsche or a Lamborghini or a Ford or anything? Unless you have some very sentimental attachment, it makes no sense to hold onto old, expensive, relatively ****ty cars. I can't believe people are still buying old, non-classic Ferraris these days. You don't have to drive a Ferrari in order to be a fan.

People who buy and/or hold onto an older Ferrari just because it's a Ferrari are making a big mistake. There are so many better cars in those prices ranges. If you really must own a Ferrari at least once, you're best off making the ownership short and crossing it off your list of things to do in your life.

If you're a car person, you're doing yourself a huge disservice buy sticking to one car/brand, especially if it's just a standard, old model. There is a reason that people with the means to own any Ferrari don't still have 348s, 360s, 550s, 430s, etc. Simply put, just cause it's a Ferrari doesn't make it worth owning or keeping.

 

Key words are "Just because" imo.

 

If you're a car person, you'd understand why somebody wants a specific model that isn't necessarily the latest and greatest. You're doing yourself a huge disservice by dismissing a car just because it's not the latest model available.

 

The best chick car I ever owned was a Maser Spyder. The gals loved that car. The Ferraris? Not so much.

This is the only, and best, reason. Because you can and you want to. Nothing else matters.

Ferrari's are a passion. Either you have the passion or you don't. Nothing wrong if you don't but if you don't you just go elsewhere from an automotive perspective. They are however, special cars.

They attract more guys by far than women, but unlike some other cars like BMW, Ferrari have not lost thier passion for building special automobiles.

They are a PITA but so is my wife and I still have her around so I sure as hell am not selling my Ferrari unless I get another one or I am forced to due to financial issues.

Well, like I said, it could be a sentimental thing or it could be a classic/rare car.

Unless you can just afford to keep all your cars, there is no reason to hold onto them because they are always available and rarely going up in price. Go try something new, and if you don't like it, go buy another 355 or 360 or whatever.

Heck, it doesn't even have to be new. Sell the 360 or 355 or whatever and go buy an old Alfa or Mustang. Anything.

You only live once. Playing it safe is pretty damn dull if you ask me. Never know what you'll find out there.

I've bought 6 and sold 4 (Ferraris). Sold 2 of the 4 because I had to (funds wanted for something else) ---- sold the other 2 because I wanted to (did not enjoy one all that much, and the other was a PITA so I traded for another car).

Only one I regret selling was a Boxer BBi, back in late 90's. But, frankly the main reason I regret that is because of the appreciated value today. It was never my favorite Ferrari to own or to drive --- all a matter of subjective taste, I suppose. The Boxer was the one I actually traded ---- even across ---- for a Countach. The Countach was a BIG mistake and only lasted about 6 months before I got rid of it..... single worst exotic car ownership experience I have had. I freakin' hated that car.

What's strange, as it so happens, is the 2 that I've kept happen to be the very first, and the very last (so far ) that I've purchased .

 

The only legitimate reason to sell an F car is a lack of garage space to stable your new one in.

Famous people like to be seen like the Kardashian's,ugh! I am an avid watch collector BUT I will never own a Rolex b/c the majority of folks who own them know nothing of the quality and craftmanship,and do not appreciate them for such but they buy them for status;i.e. most folks do not know what a mechanical watch is ,or that Rolex is one of a few watch houses that actually makes its own movements. I do not want folks to say,"oh he has a Rolex for status...ass hole"!

The second thing about selling cars once adored by the owner that no one mentioned that I saw was that for me the hunt is more fun than the ownership; its actually anti-climactic once I get the car. For me,its finding that perfect car, you know low miles, great records, not too many of them, awesome price ,etc and once I pull the trigger, its over. Yes its sick but that's what I do, in fact I look at the net on multiple sites 7 nights a week, now that's sick!...Doc

 

If it helps, just know that while there are people who may think you're an ******* for wearing a Rolex, there are also people on the other side of the world who think you deserve to die for your religious and political beliefs. Heck, there are probably people driving next to you at times who hate you because of your skin color.

Don't sweat it. There will always be people who absolutely hate you, and for most of them it has nothing to do with what you have.

Go buy a Rolex and enjoy it. Most people you see in life will never be seen again. Now if on the other hand your wife thinks you're an *******, well then maybe just forget about the Rolex haha.

 

Buy what floats your boat. I actually prefer my 355 spider stick over my 458 spider. When they are parked side by side and I have the keys for both in my hand, 355 often wins. I like my CS a lot and will not buy a 458 scud. Love the F12. Personal preference is so individual
