Just got home from Detroit. Love watching all the great craftsmanship on this thread! BTW, I was in the Ford archives today and was able to see and touch original sketches and renderings from Ghia. There were some original Guigiaro proposals from the early 60's and original Ferrari drawings. I know where I'm going next time I'm in Dearborn!

It was really cool! I was able to look at original letters from Henry Ford, Henry Ford II and Robert McNamara including minutes from styling reviews. Files and files of photo negatives. Very proper and formal.

Freeman, That's the next best thing to having been a fly on the wall! It must be extremely enlightening to learn just how particular design decisions were made. Was it a compromise, or an all-or-nothing demand from the designers involved? Fascinating! Fred

We have the passenger lower rocker completed last week and got a jump start on some parts to body fit and surfacing. We plan to move back to the doors this week and work them over. The driver's door will need a lower skin put on. I will keep posting pics as this Dino gets a new face-lift.

If you go back a couple pages you'll be able to see that we replaced the inner and outer rockers on both sides and other components on this Dino. After the rockers were completed the doors were hung for the first time since receiving the Dino from Jon G. As you can tell by some of the photos, the doors and roof do not fit very well. We had in some places 1/2 inch gaps, which needed to be addressed. When Jon had this car sand blasted he invited me down to look and we did see that in a lot of these jams there was an over abundance of filler to compensate the shut gaps. After we got both doors and roof installed I decided to put the car on my frame machine to finalize measurements and to make the appropriate pulls needed to close the gaps up. Now we're about 3 mm on most all shut gaps.

There will still be final adjustments after Jon gets the suspension in and the car gets loaded up with weight from the engine and interior. So, in final assembly we can fine-tune the shut gaps. As much as I wanted to be in primer this week it was far more important to rectify the fit issues. We will be going into primer next week and I will post more photos as we now work closer to the paint prep process. I should be getting a decision from the owner on color shortly as well.

    Peace,
    Steve

Today I went to LA to my favorite plater and I made a stop at AC Global MFG. in Southgate, Ca. As Rob's car needed a new AC condenser I thought I would go to source and see how they are made. I love old working factories with the sounds and the old machines. Davis Cabrera the owner who took over for his Dad gave me a tour. Then stopped at Steve's to see the progress on the body. It was looking really good with even gaps all around and ready for primer tomorrow!!. Come on Rob, we need that color choice.

What a great feeling to get this Dino in the paint phase!! This Dino has been a lot of work. But it will be the nicest GTS on this planet.

Beau Van Nornam, my apprentice, got some spray time in on this Dino today. I couldn't ask for a better assistant. I also want to thank Mike Sanchez a great old friend and colleague that helped us in the surfacing to get this baby in primer today.

We still have a lot of blocking ahead of us but it's the excitement of getting closer to paint day that keep us going. A labor of love.

Rob... You have about three weeks to get me your choice of color. Take your time. I like Door # two. Jon... Your rotisserie worked great!!! Thank you. I am going to take Rob's GTS off and put his Dino on a rolling cart I built last week so you can get your rotisserie back to get your 206 mounted up. We got to keep you busy Jon... you have nothing to do right now.

    Peace,

    Steve

It looks great Steve. I'm partial to door #3! Seeing I'm so far ahead of you, I'm leaving for Monaco on Sunday for the F1 race in Monaco and then a trip to Mecca aka Maranello!

Jon, not that you can go wrong with any of the three color options (door #1, perhaps), but are you ever going to do one in that beautiful purple (forgot the name right now, viola I seem to think)? Monaco F1 should be fantastic.
