I assume that the exhaust tips are fakes, and the actual exhaust outlet sits inside of them.

A large number of manufacturers do this.

That's roughly the conclusion I came to...

I was confused because the 599 had real exhaust mufflers going through the bumper...

It would be more complicated for after market companies to fit another exhaust... Maybe Ferrari did it on purpose..

    Anyway thanks for the answer

Manufacturers have been doing this for years now. I remember being very disappointed when i realized the tip on the 996 C4S were just that and not the actual exhaust. It's also very apparent with the 430 Scud.

Now I remember ... I took a closer look at the RS5 exhaust and the big ovale tips are just a part of the bumper.

    I don't like it all.

Assuming it is similar to the California and the FF, the exhaust tips do not connect directly to the mufflers, there is a small gap between them. So the exhaust comes out of the muffler and blows into the exhaust tips. It seems a very cool idea since the mufflers can move around all they want but you can have a clean, unmoveable exhaust tip that has no empty space around it.

    A few possibilities:

It can help prevent exhaust system damage during a minor rear impact. It may also lessen stress on the exhaust tubing and mufflers, replacing multiple large, heavy tips welded at the very end of the system. There are also no exhaust tip centering issues.
