What is the preferred method to secure the 458 to a trailer? I have seen wheel straps through the wheels and over the wheels. I have also seen people looping their suspension pieces with padded straps. If the best solution is attaching to the suspension, what are the attachment points?

I have been using a through the wheel set up with our Cayman R for short trips to the track. That being said, I have a fairly long trip coming up (600 miles) and I want to be secure and minimize the chance that I might damage the Ferrari.

Thanks in advance for any and all help.

there is another thread or two buried here on Fchat about towing setups, including for a 458, might be worth a search.

short version (and my version), you do need lace through the wheels. Do NOT connect to any part of the suspension or under tray. You can use the tow hook as well, obviously.

Use clean wheel straps, and put some towels or microfibers around the straps before you put them on to prevent chafing or scuffing. Having the wheels clean also helps prevent scratches.

Others may have different opinions, but I always put cars in neutral and out of gear when towing, the endless (very small) back-and-forth isn't nice to some gearboxes.

In a 458 that would be carwash mode...

Dude, let me help you out. Just tell me where you want the car and give me the keys. I guarantee you that you will not have any wheel rash. :)

Thanks for the input. I have been trailering a Cayman with the tie downs through the wheels without problem. I have to say that I have been leaving the transmission in park for these excursions. Didn't occur to me that the motion would be wearing on the transmission. Good advice.

    Tex,

Thanks, I will keep your very generous offer in mind.

I noticed the Ferrari dealer here goes through the wheels when they move the 458's outside the town. Not clean straps, but suspect does not damage the wheels. But agree earlier it is best to cover the straps with soft cotton towel, or quality microfibre.

From towing my track car you guys may already may know, besides keeping in neutral and emergency brake on, is the proper torque of the straps/tie downs. I used to crank as hard as possible and nearly stretch the straps some knowing was very secure. That is not good for the suspension. Best to keep straps snug, not tight tight.

Lastly what I learned ... not to secure the wrench tow hook to the cars tow hook, in addition to the 4 wheel straps while the tow is underway. The vibration during the tow breaks the wrench motor in half, and is not recommended by the manufacture. Don't ask how I know.

No problemo. Look, I have heard of a dude who has an app for that mileage thing, so that shouldn't be a problem. :)

I have used wheel nets from Macs custom tie downs. They will make them specifically for your tire size and they hold GREAT. I have done 500 mile trips and the car didnt move an inch. Really reassuring when you hit a pothole doing 70 with a wet trailer bed. I highly recommend them. Also, as far as neutral or in gear, I just park the car and take the key out, so I guess it is in gear, but with wheel nets it doesn't matter as the wheels are fixed in place.

PM me and I will send you some photos if you would like, I don't know how to post photos.
