My 355 has a rattling noise when cold which seems to disappear after the car is sufficiently warm and usually has been driven a bit. I asked at the dealer and the response I got was it's just one of those things that Ferrari's do. What ever is rattling quiets down after it heats up and expands.

Does this seam like a reasonable explanation to anyone? Would this be typical of a rattling bypass valve? Does that stop after warming up?

    Where is the rattling located?

My 348 does something similar --- I have to search through my threads.. but I think we determined it's the air regulators in the engine compartment until they complete some process (help me here experts).

Maybe the same thing in your 355?

Mine did the same thing before my last major this spring. I had to rebuild my lifters, not fun nor cheap.

I was actually thinking of a bit stronger word once i got the diagnosis from Dr. Helms, smooth as can be now that the lifters have been fixed.

My 355 did this also and it was just a loose exhaust shield. Once warm the metal expands and things tighten up and the rattle stops.

I'm hoping that this is what is happening with mine. This would fit along the lines of what the dealer has said. I'll have to listen and try to isolate the location.

Were you able to do anything to tighten up the shields or do you just live with the rattle until it stops?

This seems to be a common thing for 355's to do. Several things have been said to cause it. The one I believe, is that the hydraulic tensioners for the cam belts can bottom-out when cold and cause a metal on metal clapping sound. As the belts get warmer and longer, the tension is less and doesn't bottom out the tensioners.

My rattle started only a few months after the major, so I took it back to the dealer and they fixed it.

My rattle<sounds like rocks> starts about 5 min after start up at idle, then goes away after i drive for a few miles.
I have no idea what it is and i just live with it because it's hard to say where the noise is coming from.

Mine is actually the inverse - i.e. does not rattle when cold but seems to as it gets warm. Dealer went over it with steth and determined a) my heat shield is delaminating a bit (probably not the cause) and b) a loose baffle in the muffler that reacts to temperature. Will replace muffler when I have Major done next year - dilemma is to replace with used OEM and keep it original or go with Tubi or Capristo - decisions decisions.

I would have your dealer steth it to make sure it is somewhere in the back end of the exhaust (annoying but probably not critical) versus upstream as some have suggested (lifters, belt tensioners etc.) which probably have a higher sense or urgency for addressing.

    Cheers

I'd appreciate it. My car is scheduled to be part of that promotional group for the Bay to Hollywood rally and will be parked in their area.

my mechanic says it's the spring that attached to clutch area. It goes away after 2-3 mins of driving though.

    Cheers

I have a similar rattle in the exhaust area, but the weird thing is it only happens about 1/2 of the time, and only rattles from idle to 2500 rpms and goes away as soon as I exceed 2500 rpms. Then comes back again at idle or under 2500.

Any one else have this or heard of it?

Disclaimer: Not diagnosing, but rather sharing. I feel for a fellow extraneous-noise-hater! That said, ...:

I have had a rattle develop after working on the CV joints, turns out the little heat shields that protect the CVs are pretty tightly packaged in there between a bunch of hot metal bits (most are exhaust-related) and so when they were replaced post-service, the angle was slightly off (new bolts, slightly different position) and they touched other metal bits at certain resonant frequencies (at least it seemed like multiple modes of the same fundamental frequency). I cared enough to tinker with it in micro-adjustments until it stopped making the noise.

May be an avenue to explore.
