how fitting.... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mz1LsXwATig]Top Gear Copyright Infringement - YouTube[/ame]
But wait there it more! (I am really on a roll now...) 99.99% of the people who meet your new lady will have no idea who she is or who she looks like, they will just think she looks like a slut. But there will be 1 guy who is a porn nut, has seen all the movies with Marilyn in them, met her twice, banged her understudy - a REAL porn star, and absolutely hates you for cheapening the image of his favorite starlet. He wants your lady dead, preferably crushed.
There's no need to re-invent the wheel 'now', is there? The difference imo, is in the inimitable Ferrari engine; but excluding that, the 'cheap and fun' replica will usually appeal to more people than the original and will likely prove to be more robust as well. I like Ferraris - who doesn't? BUT, they are exorbitantly expensive, so most people would not tolerate the less than stellar quality found in parts of them, if it were so in an entry level Kia.....just sayin'!
The question that started this thread: Replicas, why bother? The OP was asking why anyone 'needs' replicas in place of an authentic Ferrari, etc. No one has come up with a reason.
Pretty sure I did...unless you mean 'a reason YOU agree with'...which is silly as im sure I can find things in yours or anyone elses lives that I find to be as irrational and pointless as you find owning a replica.
Bingo. According to Mr. Market, replicas are worth less than the real cars even though they are, cheaper to maintain (everything is cheaper to maintain than a Ferrari, whoop dee do), easier to drive (really?, well, anything is easier to drive than a Countach), as good looking (to a blind person) and have an equivalent mechanical feel (Pontiac=Ferrari). Mr. Market is being fooled say your replica buddies. Mr. Market is smarter than your buddies. And yes, I hate fakes. As Rob put it in the (fake) 288 GTO thread, fake watches, fake people, fake cars. -F
This sounds like a new excuse to add to the list of why people need fake Ferraris: "need to make a replica because some Ferrari parts are subpar". It's actually not much worse than the usual rationalizations.
Craziest statment I've seen yet! I think they will offend more people is more likely. Or did you mean it would appeal to people under the age of 12? That, I could believe!
It is not an excuse, it is a reason based on good sense. The rationale is based upon having FUN with a car. To hear some of the vitriolic criticism and see how upset some guys here get at the notion of replicas, is a far sadder reflection of them than any opinion they may have of replicas or their owners.
If you have a VIN it's the real deal however the value may be diminished based on the lack of origional parts.
And you prove my point. There is no real reason other than "just because." If I built a car, it would be a replica and worthless to you. If Ferrari then announced to the world that it was a Ferrari and hired me, it would be super valuable to you. That's hilarious. All Ferrari has to do is say a word and something goes from valuable to worthless, and vice versa.
If Ferrari tells you guys a car is real, you value it. If they tell you it's a replica, you don't. That's pathetic if you ask me. At least the replica people have real reason for owning replicas.
'Crazy' is relative..... You 'believe' a replica would only appeal to people under the age of 12, but I 'know' that you are in the minority; especially when everyone knows the cost of Ferrari parts is ridiculous and the maintenance, service, or repair of any Ferrari or Lamborghini is insane!
I thought replicas were cool when I was twelve. No lie, but then I thought about it and realized it would never feel, sound or look like the real thing. It would never have had anything to do with Enzo or Ferrucio and have no part in the history or legacy of the company. It would never be a real Ferrari or Lamborghini. I don't know why a car enthusiast would not understand this. This view I think is held by most car people which is why only real cars tend to pull the big bucks.
I am sure I have said this before, but I am amazed at the caustic treatment of replica cars compared to how replica aircraft are warmly accepted in the aviation community. We build all sorts of full scale and some scaled down versions of mostly WWI and WWII aircraft and I have never heard anything to the effect of "Go fly your FAKE airplane while wearing your FAKE Rolex etc. etc.). It is considered a practical way of experiencing aircraft that no longer exist or are unobtainable by non-multimillionairs and the builders and observers enjoy the craftsmanship of building one and the pleasure of flying it. I own two real exotics and I think replica cars are great, seeing the labor and skill that it takes to build a Countach replica impresses me, so does the idea that you can drive it without any maintenance or repair worries. It doesn't take away at all from the sound and beauty of a real one. I grew up building RC models and then progressed into building real airplanes and to me replicas are just a grownup's version of building a really cool model car of their dream car that you actually get into and drive.
The 12 year old in all of us like the 'look' of the car and to most people, that is all that matters.
