In the case with KB - the flagger was waving the green, and they were (I think) past the starting box.

The commentators go into detail about the start around the 10:40 mark.

I'm going to trust their statements while understanding that they can't stand there and openly bash NASCAR for allowing such a screwed up start to a race.

While this is the start of the race, restarts are basically the same with the leader controlling the start. It would be to confusing and chaotic to let 2nd place race for the start so they let the leader go first as he has earned that right as the leader. Otherwise they would have constant jumping the green flag or whatever. They would need a Xmas tree for restarts

When it was single file restarts the leader led them to the line and there was no passing before the line. Although we now have double file restarts, having the leader cross the line first continues that tradition and also helps make an organized restart.

This was discussed pretty thoroughly in other threads - but ultimately, the "celebrity" flagger got excited and did the wrong thing. The flagger starts the race, but instead of waving after seeing the pole sitter take off, went ahead and waved it - thus starting the race.

A flagger that gets it wrong, can be soooo frustrating as a driver.

At anyrate, NASCAR's after story for race leaders, is that on starts, if the green is waving, go.

the key thing there is the "restart zone" well before s/f. JPM was ahead, albeit slightly, when they got there; and he spun the tires giving JJ a big lead at s/f.

as far as I know the only "no passing before s/f" rule is you can't pass to the right; not sure if that rule is still in effect though.

 

In the video I provided Dale Jarrett says " the pole sitter starts the race NOT the flagman ".

Are you saying that you and Kyle Bush are right and Dale Jarrett, a Winston Cup Champion that has done at least a thousand starts and restarts is wrong

The pole sitter starts the race. They wave the green flag secondly to confirm the start of the race. If for some reason the pole sitter is unable to start they would then revert to the green flag. Kyle Bush's cue to start is when Kasey Kane goes and he must not pass him before the line. Kyle went off the flagger and that is wrong therefore he should have received the same penalty as JJ did yesterday.

It was a bad restart. Never in my 25 years of watching NASCAR have I seen one that messed up. NASCAR should have either called off the start and re do it or gave the black flag to Kyle Bush. I think they just tried to brush it off and not make it even more embarrassing. To make matters even worse, later in the race Elliott Sadler did the same thing and they gave him the black flag. Total flip flop. NASCAR's explanation was it was different because it was a restart.

 

There is no passing for the 2nd place car before the line which again is about letting the leader start the race.
Everyone behind them can pass before the line but only on the left and not on the right as you pointed out.

 

I thought NASCAR made an exception when the leader fails to get up to speed properly (missed shift, spins the tires, etc). but hey, what do I know. I'm glad Jimmie "less interesting than watching paint from Lowes drying" Johnson didn't win

 

Yes that would be the exception not the rule, so to speak

In the Kasey vs Bush start I posted the video of they later went to Kasey's onboard camera and you could hear that Kasey was still at pace speed when Kyle took off. No engine rev and no gear grinding. Clearly KB took off before Kasey. Whether KB had the right to is the question.

I didn't see anywhere that Montoya spun his tires or missed a gear. If a guy jumps the start early he's going to make everyone look like their stuck in mud so there really needs to be some proof of that other than it looks like the leader didn't get going.

I'm really glad Kyle Bush didn't win

 

is it possible that you are as big a fan of kyle as I am of the show pony?

in 1991, bill wood of willwood engineered products told me he tried not to become friends with the sprint car drivers because they didn't hang around too long. sad but true. sprint cars are amazing to watch but sadly they are very dangerous.

That was a pretty prevalent thought in the 60's and into the 70's as well, with good reason.

 

I'm only 5 miles from the track and with a few minutes to go and it looks like rain. wind is about five or six miles per hour.
