I am attempting to repack the rear outer CV joints and replace the boots on my 94 348. So far I have disconnected the:

    1) Brake caliper
    2) Brake rotor and associated axle nut
    3) Upper and lower a arm bolts
    4) Bottom bolt on the shock
    5) Inner CV bolts are out except for one and it is well loose. Basically the axle is hanging loose on the diff. end.

The problem is I can't get the axles to release from the hub. I've tried rotating the hub up and down and the axle does not budge from the hub. The workshop manual shows this as a splined shaft. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I have put force on the end of the axle with a hammer and wood block but am leery of hitting it to hard for fear of damage.

I'm stuck on this and would really appreciate suggestions from anyone that has had this same problem.

They would just be tight on the spline Joe. Kinda rust together a little bit, if you know what I mean.

Try spray some WD40 (or the like) in there to loosen it up and then keep hitting it with the hammer and block of wood.

I have put Sea Foam Deep Creep on a couple of times where the shaft comes thru the hub on the wheel side. I don't see any other accessible areas to spray. Sounds like you're telling me I've disconnected everything necessary to get the axle out.

OK thanks for getting back to me. I sure hate beating on expensive parts. I guess in the F-world that's everything.

No need to hit anything. Get a hub puller or maybe a large 3-jaw puller and do it the right way.

I've seen them assembled with green Loctite on the splines (no idea why). You'd never be able to hit that hard enough without wrecking things. I broke a cheap puller on one once before getting out the "Big Mamoose".

Clean the splines and coat with anti-seize when it goes back together.

Well, that is the BEST way to do it of course. :)

I have never used one though, have always bashed (got) them out. :)

If you are going to bash it, get a big brass punch and bash on that.
Or, get a puller and do it the non destructive way.

Hey, I like this idea. Will look for a hub puller tomorrow.

I have a 3kg Copper hammer I use and as mentioned...................I ALWAYS get them out. ;)

The brass punch or copper punch is a better idea than the block of wood he is using, you don't tend to mention these things as it was quite obvious to me Brewman does not have a puller or a brass/copper punch at his disposal.

So you have to make do with what you have. Keep flogging it Brewman! It will eventually come out. :D

    PAP348,

Thanks for your help in resolving my question. I used a large puller. Both axles on floor in 1 hour.

    Thanks Again,
